Audio file formats
Audio files for sale by African Composers Edition are available in standard and high audio quality:
- Standard quality: 320 kbit/s MP3 files.
- High quality: FLAC files, identical to CD.
When buying audio files, it is sensible to choose a high-quality format. FLAC is gaining recognition as a high-quality alternative to MP3. A FLAC copy of a CD is an exact duplicate of the original, whereas an MP3 is not. Note, however, when the MP3 is encoded at 320’s kbit/s, which is the highest quality that an MP3 can be, it is possible that you may not notice a difference in clarity between FLAC and MP3.
Playing FLAC files
In order to play FLAC files, you will most likely need to install extra software. Popular choices include:
- Installing VLC media player (Mac OS X / Windows / Linux).
- Installing the DirectShow filter for Windows Media Player (for Windows users).
For advanced users it is recommended to install the Quod Libet music player (Mac OS X / Windows / Linux). The player is dependent on certain other software, so you would need to download and install a few additional software packages.
Note: It is not possible to add FLAC support to iTunes.
