African Composers Edition

The last volume of the set, containing 16 miscellaneous works written at different periods of Mohapeloa's life, some previously published, some not.

Volume VI of the Mohapeloa Critical Edition contains miscellaneous works published at various times in the composer's life or previously unpublished, the manuscript works dating mostly from his later years.

Volume Va comprises music from two sources: 8 church anthems from Hosanna and 39 short psalm settings for the African Dutch Reformed Church brought together as Bukana ea Lipesaleme (Book of Psalms) with tonic solfa

Volume V of the Mohapeloa Critical Edition comprises songs conceived for use in church, that come from two sources. There are 8 Mohapeloa songs from the general song collection Hosanna originally published in 1955, and there are 39 short Lutheran psalm settings made for the African Dutch Reformed Church in the late 1970s, previously unpublished.

Volume IVa combines two songbooks in one volume: Khalima-Nosi dating from 1951 and Meluluetsa dating from 1976, with 5 songs in the earlier book and 22 songs in the later one. These scores of modern African music with a nationalist flavour are in staff notation with tonic solfa added.

Volume IV combines two songbooks in one volume: Khalima-Nosi dating from 1951 and Meluluetsa dating from 1976. The 5 songs in the earlier book give voice to an African cosmopolitan, urban modernity while the 22 songs in the later book are more patriotic in tone and quite lengthy, celebrating the national institutions that emerged after Lesotho’s independence from Britain in 1966. 

Mohapeloa’s third book of Meloli - Meloli le Lithallere tsa Afrika (African Songs and Extemporary Harmonizations) Buka ea Boraro (Book Three) appeared in 1947, eight years after Meloli II, five years after Mohapeloa returned from the Reef where he lived and studied from 1939 to 1942, and two years after the end of World War II.

Volume 2 of the Mohapeloa Critical Edition comprises Mohapeloa’s songbook Meloli le Lithallere tsa Afrika II: Buka ea Bobeli (African Songs and Extemporary Harmonizations, Book 2), originally published in 1939 in Morija, Lesotho.
