Professional ranking of world universities

2009 survey

The École des Mines de Paris – MINES ParisTech – is proposing a third edition of its International Professional Classification of Higher Education Institutions, established on the basis of the number of alumni listed among CEOs in the 500 largest worldwide companies.

1.Choice of ranking criteria

Measuring the quality of training provided by higher education institutions rests on a variety of criteria:

- the salary and the period of delay before recruitment of graduates would seem to be one of the most relevant data for assessing the short-term quality of training courses evaluated by employers; nevertheless, the corresponding data, when they are available (which is quite rare except for MBA graduates), are essentially declared; furthermore, variations in the cost of living, from one country to another, inevitably introduce a significant bias in the classification;

- senior managerial positions occupied by alumni would also be an interesting factor for assessing the quality of alumni's academic careers; however, the definition of a senior executive may vary from one company to another; what is more, comparing the executive director of an SME with the CEO of a major international group may raise a number of problems of coherence;

- the creation of companies by graduates could also be a relevant criterion to be taken into account but, once again, the data on an international level do not exist, and achievements (companies actually created) are difficult to compare.

We have therefore chosen to adopt a simple criterion, undeclared but verifiable: the number of alumni holding a post of chief executive officer or equivalent in one of the 500 leading international companies, at a particular time and with the data, (companies and company leaders) of the Fortune Global 500 classification established by Fortune magazine in 2008 on the basis of turnover published by international companies.

This criterion is meant to be the equivalent, as far as companies are concerned, of the criterion of “alumni having been awarded the Nobel Prize or the Fields Medal”, used in the classification established by Jiaotong University in Shanghai, the former students concerned being of a similar number. However, unlike the Shanghai classification, this criterion points to the performance of the training courses provided by higher education institutions rather than performance achieved in research by those institutions.

2. Ranking methodology

The academic career for qualification in higher education of “top executives” (subsequently referred to as CEOs) has been redefined and, for each person in question, a point has been awarded to each of the various institutions which contributed to their higher education.

For example, the CEO of Wal-Mart Stores, H. Lee Scott, Jr., graduated from Pittsburg State University alone; 1 point is therefore awarded to Pittsburg State University.

Conversely, the CEO of General Motors, G. Richard Wagoner, Jr., graduated from both Duke University and Harvard University; ½ point is therefore awarded to Duke University and ½ point to Harvard University.

Some companies are run by two people. In that case, ½ point has been awarded to the academic career of each of the CEOs.

For example, Assicurazioni Generali is run by Sergio Balbino, who holds a degree from the University of Bologna, and by Giovanni Perissinotto, who holds two degrees from the University of Trieste. Therefore, ½ point was awarded to the University of Bologna and ½ point to the University of Trieste.

When it was not possible to identify all or part of the higher education of a CEO, the corresponding points were not awarded.

Marcel Rohner, the CEO of UBS, obtained an initial diploma at an unknown institution before obtaining a Ph.D. at the University of Zurich; consequently, only ½ point was granted to the University of Zurich, while the remaining ½ point was not awarded.

The points awarded to each institution for all of the 500 CEOs are then added up, so as to classify the range of institutions having contributed to the graduate training of one or several CEOs of the 500 companies listed by Fortune Global 500.

The University of Karlsruhe obtained 1½ points thanks in part to the CEO of Robert Boasch, Franz Fehrenbach (1 point) and, secondly, to the CEO of Daimler Chrysler, Dieter Zetsche (½ point).

3.Analysis of results

In 2008, the 500 companies of Fortune Global 500 were run by 506 people (six companies had two leaders). We were able to obtain information on the higher education career of 475 of the 506 CEOs. For the other 31 (i.e. 6.1% of the total number), it was not possible to reconstitute any aspect of their academic career. For seven CEOs, the assessment was only partial. Lastly, 12 CEOs had not pursued any higher education studies. The results of this academic career profile are listed in detail under paragraph 6.

This year, once again, it has not been possible to assess the academic career of European and Asian CEOs (see table 1); this has certainly been unfavourable to the higher education institutions of those continents.

Table 1: Geographical distribution of CEOs whose higher education career has not been identified.

This methodology has made it possible to award 454.17 points to 377 higher education institutions (as many institutions contributed to the training of several CEOs). A detailed list of these 377 institutions is to be found in annex to paragraph 7 of this study.

It may be useful to examine the results (paragraph 7) on a group basis as, for a given institution, the training provided to a CEO, whether more or less supplementary, can have a very strong impact on his/her ranking. Table 2 therefore displays the distribution of institutions according to the “equivalent number” of trained CEOs.

Comment: The very notion of classification may become virtually meaningless beyond the 62nd ranking as in that case the institutions have trained less than the equivalent of 2 CEOs.

4.Statistics per country

It is then possible, for each of these groups, to consider the distribution per country of the classified higher education institutions. That is the subject of the three following tables:

Table 5: Classification according to country of the number of institutions having trained the equivalent of 2 or more CEOs (Top 62).

Countries can therefore be classified according to the number of points or factor obtained by their higher education institutions (table 6 – columns 1 to 3).

In South Korea, Seoul National University scored 6.17 points; Sungkyunkwan University scored 1.25; Hanyang University and Yansei University each scored 1 point; Korea University scored 0.92; the total number of points therefore ranks South Korea in ninth position among the countries with a total of 10.33 points (as the figures have been rounded up or down).

However, it is quite clear that the results of a country are very strongly correlated to the number of companies of that country represented in Fortune Global 500 insofar as, more often than not, the companies are managed by executives who have completed most of their higher education in their country of origin.

The USA, which has 153 companies among the 500 leaders, is distinctly privileged in this classification according to country.

It may therefore be worthwhile to compare the points actually obtained by a country (obtained by “its” institutions) with those, of a theoretical nature, which it should have obtained if the CEOs of all of “its” companies had been trained exclusively in “its” universities. This comparison should provide us with an indication of the attractiveness and relevance of the higher education courses offered by each country (does it only train the CEOs of the country's companies? does it contribute to the training of the CEOs of companies in other countries? do the CEOs of its companies seek training in other countries?).

Taking account of the 31 academic careers not accounted for, 7 academic careers partly recorded and 12 “self-taught” CEOs, it was on the basis of 454.17 points awarded by the 500 classified companies that it was possible to determine the theoretical points for each country. Thanks to this it was possible to establish a ratio between “obtained points” and “theoretical points” for each country. The results are presented in the latter part of table 6 (columns 4 and 5).

With the previous example, it was observed that South Korea had a total score of 10.33 points. In point of fact, 14 out of the 15 Korean companies classified among the leading 500 were accounted for. If the 14 CEOs of these companies had all been trained in Korea, the country should have a total number of points – theoretical points – of 14. The ratio between “real” and “theoretical” points for Korea is therefore of 0.74 (i.e. 10.33/14), substantially below 1, which means that the Korean CEOs obtained on average a quarter of their higher education diplomas in other countries.

Comment: Examination of this table can also show that, with the notable exception of South Africa, Austria and Ireland (which have contributed to training many more CEOs than they have companies among the 500 leaders), the differences between countries are not as great; the ratio of the USA, in particular, which is only 1.15, relativizes the predominance of its training institutions. France's ratio exceeds 1.

5.FAQ

The numerous reactions to the 2007 and 2008 editions of this ranking have led us to list below the main questions raised and to attempt to specify our point of view in each case.

- How do you justify recourse to a single criterion?

A single criterion for assessing the quality of higher education courses may appear very limiting. As indicated in paragraph 1, however, it is the only verifiable and reproducible characteristic that we have wanted for this classification. Everyone can in fact carry out this survey again with the same criterion and the result will not change.

- Does not the quality of a particular type of training depend on the number of future CEOs trained?

The quality of a particular training course naturally comprises many aspects. There are excellent institutions that have never trained CEOs in companies listed in Fortune Global 500 (the École Normale Supérieure de la rue d'Ulm is but one example). Similarly, there are excellent research institutions which have never worked with or trained Nobel laureates or winners of the Fields Medal.

In a world in which higher education is exposed to increasing international competition, such an indicator (very widely used by MBA programmes) may nonetheless be meaningful.

- The CEOs completed their studies 30 years ago; is it therefore the institutions' past which is evaluated?

Perfectly justified … as for the Nobel laureates referred to above. Our idea is to reproduce this classification every year and to analyse trends over time. We shall certainly continue to study the past but in a dynamic manner.

- If the Shanghai ranking has the drawback of placing emphasis on research, the ranking of Mines Paris has that of emphasizing the “business” dimension; neither of the two focuses on innovation and company creation, which surely are driving factors in a country's economy?

This constitutes a very significant criticism (to our mind). As pointed out in the first paragraph, we cannot unfortunately see which criteria should be used for assessing these major factors.

- In the case of France, this classification merely underlines the fact that the CEOs have virtually all come up through the same academic programmes (Sciences Po – ENA or X – Mines or HEC); it is therefore normal that there should be a high ranking in relation to the North American and German systems in which the academic profiles are more varied.

The fact is that in the French system the “classes préparatoires” for admission to the Grandes Écoles (both in the sciences and in business) do not award any diploma. Our ranking can therefore not illustrate the variety of classes préparatoires attended by the CEOs during the first two or three years of their higher education.

Conversely, a young American student will more often than not attain his/her first degree in a local university before going to a few exceptional institutions (Harvard, Stanford, MIT, etc.) in order to obtain a Master's or MBA degree or Ph.D. Consequently, the system as such is not so very different from ours.

In the case of Germany, it has to be acknowledged that the higher education courses of the CEOs are in fact more evenly distributed which leads to a broader display of the performance of German institutions. Aware of this limitation in terms of visibility, the German Government recently decided to award an “international” status to three (and subsequently six) of its universities. This may have significant consequences for the future choices of German students with regard to their higher education.

Lastly, it should be noted that 28 French institutions are represented in the 2009 ranking, as opposed to 25 German institutions. Our higher education system does not therefore concentrate the training of its CEOs to such a degree.

- The favourable rankings of the École des Mines de Paris (MINES ParisTech) are due especially to its graduates from the Corps des Mines.

This is absolutely true of the 2007 ranking. In this regard, it is interesting to make a detailed analysis of the points obtained by Harvard, which largely stem from the MBA. Nonetheless, this does not mean that the rest of that university is not of a very high standard.

Conversely, 75% of the 2008 points and 60% of the 2009 points of MINES ParisTech are attributable to the graduates from the Civil Engineers' programme.

- MINES ParisTech has established a criterion enabling it to rank well.

MINES ParisTech has conducted a survey originally aimed at ascertaining to what degree it was possible to make the Shanghai ranking evolve towards a more accurate assessment of the training goals of higher education institutions.

On that occasion, we believed it was useful to highlight the good results of French institutions at a time when the Shanghai ranking was widely and is still widely discussed, and not always to the advantage of our own schools and universities.

Furthermore, these results constitute a genuine communication tool at an international level, both for the recruitment of foreign students as well as among foreign companies which are not always very familiar with our education system.

6.The academic career of the CEOs of the 500 leading international companies

(based on Fortune Global 500, 2008)

Each CEO obtained from 0 (indicated by “-@”) to 4 higher education diplomas. The actual title of the diplomas is not specified; the first diploma could be a Bachelor's degree, the second a Master's degree or a Ph.D., and the third an MBA.
