The Iraqi administration has a great responsibility in prevention of war and it has to fully abide by the resolutions of the United Nations, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the leader of the ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Party) said Tuesday.

Addressing his party at a weekly gathering in Parliament, Erdogan said Turkey has both argued that the United Nations should issue a second resolution and urged Iraq to fully comply with decisions of the United Nations. He added that Turkey would continue to fulfill its responsibilities in line with U.N. decisions and said the following:

"Turkey has come to a position to determine the fate of the Iraqi war. I have witnessed that our country is in a crucial position for the peace in both the region and the world during the Davos meetings. The meeting of foreign ministers from regional countries in Istanbul is significant. No one should ever forget that it was the foreign ministers of countries who have disputes with one another who met in Istanbul.

A lot of things have been done for peace. But some claim the Istanbul meeting has no importance at all. The only thing I can tell them is that a fox would say grapes are sour when they are beyond its reach.

Some are surprised how the AK Party spoke about Turkey in Davos. Previous governments could not do it but we will. We will tell foreigners that Turkey contains all these different colors. We will tell them how a nation with deep roots in history managed to recover and stand up. We will tell them that this nation is now on the way to modernization. There are some who cannot do this. They are schizophrenic and they will always be. The AK Party, on the other hand, will continue to take active steps to determine the agenda in foreign policy."

Erdogan also said Turkey was a regional center and added that the distance between the state and society should be bridged, not grow bigger.

"Those who do not know us, those who do not want to understand us should know that our enthusiasm will remain intact," Erdogan said and added that the AK Party government would take steps to make "social state" a reality, not merely something in rhetoric. In this regard, he pledged, the State Statistic Institute will prepare a general report on poverty in Turkey, on the basis of which the state would provide help for the poor.
