Khuzaima Qutbuddin cross-examined in HC in the Syedna title row case

Khuzaima Qutbuddin, uncle of the incumbent 53rd Syedna Muffadal Saifuddin, on Wednesday informed the Bombay High Court during his cross-examination that he had attended a majlis (gathering) where it was announced that naas was conferred on Muffadal by the late 52nd Dai ul Mutlaq Syedna Mohammed Burhanuddin.
Qutbuddin is being cross-examined in the HC in a suit filed by him, claiming to be declared as the rightful 53rd Syedna. He was asked if he had attended a majlis on June 6, 2011, at Saifee Masjid. He told the court, "The majlis was because the health of his holiness (52nd Dai) was not good. An announcement was also to be made of the alleged naas conferred on the defendant (Muffadal)."
He also told the court that a tape recorded by Qaid Johar, (eldest) son of the late Syedna, was played during the majlis, and it was among the many items that were performed at that majlis.
It was also put to him whether he had taken sherbet during the majlis, which is said to be had only on celebratory occasions. Qutbuddin replied that he had consumed it, but clarified that it was a routine.
Qutbuddin also told the court that on the next day he had called up Johar in London to inquire about the health of the late Syedna, who was admitted in Cromwell Hospital after having suffered a cardiac arrest.
Counsel Iqbal Chagla, appearing for Muffadal, asked Qutbuddin whether he had expressed disappointment to his daughter and Johar's daughter-in-law Fatima about the pronouncement of the successor. He then said, "I did not say anything about this to Fatima..."
Qutbuddin had, in an earlier hearing, said the 52nd Syedna Mohammed Burhanuddin appointed him as the mazoon and given a sermon. At that time he said I was a beloved son, Qutbuddin had said. This carried the meaning that he was his successor. Chagla, however, suggested to him that one Hussain Dawoodbhai was also referred to as Al-Walad-Al-Ahabb, which means beloved son. Qutbuddin, however, clarified that the meaning may be the same but the context was different.
Justice Gautam Patel will continue the cross-examination on Friday.
