After a hefty 5 months (5 months?) we are back with one of the last posts in the Edmonton Art Institutions series. This time around, we’re covering the different groups that work tirelessly towards the advancement of arts and culture in Edmonton:

The Edmonton Arts Council functions as a City of Edmonton non-profit that supports Edmonton arts through grants to both individuals and groups, as well as the installation of public art throughout the city.
Alberta Museums Association: http://www.museums.ab.ca/
The Alberta Museums Association provides programs and activities for members (individual and group) related to museum practice. They also facilitate coursework for a Certificate in Museums Studies as well as an annual conference.
Alberta Foundation for the Arts: http://www.affta.ab.ca/default.aspx
The AFA exists to support Alberta artist’s through funding and promoting, as well as maintaining a collection comprised of works by Albertan artists. The AFA is part of the Ministry of Culture of the Government of Alberta.
Alberta Craft Council: http://www.albertacraft.ab.ca/index.htm
The ACC is a non-profit organization that provides gallery space and funding for the dissemination of fine crafts in Alberta. They have exhibition space, a gallery shop, publish Alberta Craft Magazine, Alberta Craft Awards and fundraising events.
M.A.D.E.: http://madeinedmonton.org/
M.A.D.E. is a generally volunteer-driven non-profit that hosts events about international art and design for Edmontonians, with a focus on architecture and design.
Arts on the Ave: http://artsontheave.org/
Arts on the Ave is a completely volunteer run non-profit society working to develop 118 Ave. into a community arts district through festivals, The Carrot Art and Coffeehouse, and the renovation of the Old Cycle Building into a community arts centre.
Canadian Heritage: http://www.pch.gc.ca/
Canadian Heritage is responsible for national policies and programs that promote Canadian content. The Department’s main activities involve funding community and other third party organizations to promote the benefits of culture, identity and sport. They have a provincial office located in Edmonton.
Friends of University Hospitals: http://www.friendsofuah.org/
The McMullen Art Gallery is operated by the Friends of University Hospitals as part of the Arts in Healthcare program, located by the 112 St. entrance inside the University of Alberta Hospital. They accept submissions from both groups and individuals, and offer drop-in studios on Thursdays.

The VAAA is a non-profit, Provincial Arts Service Organization committed to promote and assist Alberta art and artists, connecting them with the general public. VAAA has a gallery space as well as a multitude of programs including scholarships, workshops, and a blog listing arts-related opportunities in Alberta. VAAA also facilitates CARFAC in Alberta.
The Works International Visual Arts Society: http://www.theworks.ab.ca/
The Works is a non-profit charitable organization that advances the development, awareness and appreciation of art and design in Canada and provides artists, designers and the public a forum for exchanging ideas. The Works is responsible for the annual The Works Art & Design Festival as well as The Places, an initiative designed to place publicly funded works of art in downtown Edmonton. The Works offers internships programs for both The Places and The Works Art & Design Festival.

SNAP is a not-for-profit, artist-run centre that focuses on the advancement of print culture in Edmonton, Alberta and Canada. They do so through the operation of both a studio and a gallery space, as well as classes, workshops, lectures, mentorships, artists’ residencies, art sales and publishing. SNAP routinely accepts submissions for print-related work.
artsScene Edmonton: http://www.artssceneedmonton.com/
artsScene Edmonton is a volunteer-driven non-profit agency that is an initiative of Business for the Arts. It is a network of young business professionals who support the arts through volunteerism and patronage. artsScene hosts “behind the scenes” events, a board linking service, TEDxEdmonton and various parties.

Arts and Heritage manages Art Gallery of St. Albert, the Musée Héritage Museum and the St. Albert Heritage Sites. The Art Gallery of St. Albert focuses on providing enriching educational experiences through research, exhibition and interpretation. The Musée Héritage Museum explores the story of St. Albert through a variety of exhibits and programs, preserving the community’s history.

The Edmonton Heritage Council was created to promote the research, preservation, protection and presentation of Edmonton’s heritage through salons, lectures, symposiums, exhibits, a Historian Laureate, a grant program and a blog.
the North Edmonton Sculpture Workshop: http://nesw.ca/
The North Edmonton Sculpture Workshop is a cooperative shared-studio project focused on facilitating the creation and promotion of contemporary sculpture. Common Sense is a gallery space run by the North Edmonton Sculpture Workshop. They show works by local artists in many media. Submissions are welcome.
The Professional Arts Coalition of Edmonton (PACE): http://www.pacedmonton.com/
PACE is a not-for-profit volunteer run arts advocacy group. PACE organizes the yearly Mayor’s Celebration of the Arts, as well as runs a number of advocacy campaigns targeted at the municipal, provincial, and federal governments.
The Alberta Society of Artists’: http://www.artists-society.ab.ca/
The Alberta Society of Artists’ is the oldest society of juried professional artists in Alberta. Their mandate is to promote the recognition of Alberta artists in Alberta, Canada and abroad, through such initiatives as exhibition, education and communication put on by its membership of professional artists and visual arts supporters. The ASA also coordinates the Alberta Foundation for the Arts Travelling Exhibition Program in Calgary.

Arts Habitat Edmonton is a non-profit company engaged in finding, managing and developing space for the arts, to foster a vibrant arts community in Edmonton. Major projects include the live/ work spaces ArtsHab One and ArtsHub 118, and are currently working on building ArtsCommon on 118 Ave. and Artists Quarters in the Boyle community.

The Visual Arts Studio Association of St. Albert (VASA) are committed to supporting the development of professional and emerging artists through workshops, lectures, the use of studio space and alternative exhibition space. They consider themselves to be an artist run centre.

The Visual Arts Student Association at the University of Alberta is the governing body for the Bachelor of Fine Arts yearly graduation exhibition, along with other community initiatives. Students taking classes in fine arts at the University of Alberta are welcome to join.

Edmonton Contemporary Artists’ Society (ECAS)
The Edmonton Contemporary Artists’ Society is an international collective of artists, formed for the purpose of the exhibition of abstract art in Edmonton.

The Edmonton Historical Board is a City of Edmonton organization formed to advise City Council on matters relating to historical issues in Edmonton. Their goal is to advocate for the preservation of heritage sites and documents.

The Alberta Historical Resources Foundation is an Alberta provincial government heritage initiative whose primary function is to provide heritage preservation funding. They are governed by an appointed Board of Directors.

The Allied Arts Council of Spruce Grove is a member-based artist-driven arts education centre in Spruce Grove. They offer art classes for all ages and levels, and also run the Spruce Grove Art Gallery.

The Friends of Rutherford House Society works to generate community involvement at, and assist in furthering the restoration and operation of, the Rutherford House Provincial Historic Site. They are responsible for the Arbour Room restaurant and the gift shop at the site, as well as renting the House for private services.

The Friends of Royal Alberta Museum Society (FRAMS) is a volunteer-drive, not-for-profit run society and registered charity dedicated to supporting the Royal Alberta Museum through fundraising, “friend”-raising, education programs, maintaining artifacts and expanding the museum’s collection.

The Friends of the University of Alberta Museums is a registered not-for-profit society whose purpose is to provide a link between campus and the wider community. The Friends of the Provincial Archives of Alberta Society is an incorporated non-profit organization whose mission it is to support the work of the Provincial Archives of Alberta. They do so through the acquisition, preservation and exhibition of its collections, raising awareness about the archives, supporting programs, and running the Archives Store.

The Edmonton Art Club is the oldest continuing art organization in Alberta, founded in 1921. It is comprised of members who meet for critiques, as well as show and sell their work annually in the winter and spring.

The Société francophone des arts visuels de l'Alberta (SAVA) mission is to support and promote the Francophone visual arts in Alberta. SAVA is responsible for the Centre d'arts visuels de l'Alberta (CAVA), a commercial gallery that sells member’s works, as well as the Professional Francophone Artists Visual of Alberta Association (PAVA) and its gallery.

The Art Society of Strathcona County serves the area in and around Sherwood Park as a member-based artists group who administer the arts in the County through workshops, art events and exhibits in the Loft Gallery.
