'Protection of Information Bill':
November 24 2011: JASA has written to the Chairperson of the NCOP again urging him to ensure that public hearings are held next year in all the Provinces and in Cape Town. Failure to do so will be a breach of sections 72 and 118 of the Constitution and result in an application to strike the Bill down as in John Smyth's successful Doctors for Life case. See below for relevant documents.

Bill to protect children and women from internet and cell phone pornography:
Following JASA's drafting of a Bill for the Deputy Minister of Home Affairs late last year, John Smyth and Trudie Broekmann were invited to meet with the new Deputy Minister, the Hon Fatima Chohan on 9 November 2011. We presented the minister with a further draft of the Bill (see below) which would mean that any ISP or mobile phone operator who failed to filter out pornography would lose its licence to operate. The Minister is now to consult with her senior Minister and with her ministerial colleagues in the Department of Communications.

Government Internet Porn Conference: Mon & Tues 26/27 July 2010, Cape Town: John Smyth and Peter Mancer (MD of Watchdog Int), will address the Conference. John will speak as to the constitutional legal issues. Peter Mancer, global expert, will explain how pornography can be filtered out of the internet and the costs involved.

Gambling Legislation

In response to a request from the Gambling Review Commisssion JASA presented its submission in Cape Town on March 16. John Smyth was on the stand for over an hour answering questions; he was interviewed on Cape Talk, and well reported in the Cape Times the following day. (330kb pdf document)
