Some of the gaming world’s most ardent and creative fans undoubtedly belong to the Fallout community. For instance, no less than a week after Fallout 4‘s reveal during Bethesda’s first-ever E3 2015 press conference, one gamer successfully pre-ordered the RPG with over 2,000 bottle caps by shipping them directly to the studio. More recently, a month ago to be specific, another devoted follower of the Apocalypse took it upon themselves to craft a real-life, homemade Pip-Boy 3000 using a 3D printer. Such commitment to celebrating a video game is practically unparalleled, which goes to show how important Fallout 4 is for a lot of fans the planet over.
While the above feats of ingenuity are certainly impressive, not many people can say they’ve dedicated their time to writing an entire song about their favorite video game. Having said that, just a few days ago, one fan unveiled a jaunty little ditty about Fallout 4 to their YouTube channel for the group Miracle of Sound. The tune’s fittingly titled “Going Nuclear”, and its writer goes by the name Gavin Dunne.
With a blend of blues, swing, country-rock, and doo-wop, the song perfectly reflects the Fallout universe’s artistic qualities of retro-futuristic ’50s Americana. Plus, the cadence of Dunne’s sonorous vocals are somewhat reminiscent of Johnny Cash’s rich baritone, should that pique the ears of fans of the Man in Black. However, his voice lays at a register slightly above Cash’s. Nevertheless, “Going Nuclear” is catchy enough to be queued up alongside other Wasteland jams like Marty Robbins’ killer single “Big Iron” featured on Mojave Music Radio in Fallout: New Vegas or The Ink Spots’ “I Don’t Want to Set the World On Fire” that plays on Fallout 3‘s Galaxy News Radio station.
The music also works well with the Fallout 4 gameplay footage that Miracle of Sound has edited together. Of course, a lot of what’s shown is rehashed content shown off at different gaming conventions like the trailer at gamescom 2015 or the demo at this year’s QuakeCon, but it isn’t as if people are expecting Miracle of Sound to be the arbiter of fresh in-game material. Plus, Dunne makes it easy for fans to learn the song, as radioactive-themed lyrics like “I’m going nuclear / Light up the town / The walls that hold me are melting down / I’m rising up like a mushroom cloud” are posted at the bottom of the screen.
After listening, Miracle of Sound’s Fallout 4-inspired earworm ought to have fans humming its melody well into Fallout 4‘s release in the next few months. If anything Gavin Dunne’s recording accomplishes something in that it at least solidifies the notion that 2015 is the year of Fallout.
