The Mechromancer

For $30, Borderlands 2 fans can guarantee themselves access to the first-person shooter’s four planned expansion packs. That pass, however, does not cover all of the downloadable content that developer Gearbox has in the works.

“We will have other, non-season-pass related downloadable content (DLC),” Gearbox chief executive officer Randy Pitchford wrote in a question-and-answer session with readers on Kotaku. “The additional character, Mechromancer, is one kind of example.”

Borderlands 2 is a science-fiction loot-gathering shooter. It features the level-grinding and item-finding gameplay of Diablo but is set on another planet in the first-person perspective. Read the GamesBeat review here.

The fact that the season pass won’t cover some isn’t too surprising. Gearbox clearly lists only the four expansion packs as the included content of the bundled DLC.

In addition to the Mechromancer, Gearbox is already at work on new vehicles which it also plans to add as standalone DLC, Pitchford wrote. “[It’s] awesome stuff.”

The possibility for more DLC beyond what Gearbox already has planned will depend on the success of this first batch of expanded characters and vehicles, he said.

Borderlands 2 is available now for PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3. Gearbox will release the Mechromancer DLC on October 16. The first expansion does not yet have a date, but the developer will release all four add-ons prior to June 2013.
