The Department of External Relations, Marketing and Communications is a significant professional unit within the University and is responsible for advancing its reputation to a diverse range of audiences. An award-winning team of 160 staff, it unites four key areas: Student Recruitment, Admissions and Widening Participations; Marketing; Communications and Public Affairs; and Development and Alumni Relations. The Department now seeks to enhance its leadership with the appointment of a new Director of Development and Alumni Relations.

Responsible for leading the philanthropic efforts at the University of Liverpool, this role will develop the University’s strategies for innovative fundraising and supporter engagement, articulating clear goals and leading on their delivery. They will deliver consistent and successful fundraising activity that enhances the University’s current provision and contributes to its 2026 Strategy. The Director will also play a key role in increasing engagement with the 202,000 strong alumni community by strengthening and growing its network, offering rich opportunities for alumni from across the world to interact with the University and with each other.

The successful candidate will have a proven track record of leading development and supporter activities and will have significant experience of securing major philanthropic gifts. S/he will be an excellent communicator who is passionate about the University of Liverpool and able to articulate its vision in a compelling manner to a wide range of supporters. S/he will have a proven track record of leading and motivating a team and an ability to build effective, credible and positive relationships with a diverse range of internal and external stakeholders. S/he is likely to have held senior fundraising roles in the higher education sector or other relevant contexts.
