Fort Stanton was built in 1855 by soldiers of the 1st Dragoon and 3rd and 8th Infantry Regiments to serve as a base of operations against the Mescalero Apache Indians. It served as a military fortification through 1896. Built of local stone, the sturdy 1855 buildings have lasted to this day. The Fort has seen a long and famous history including Col. Kit Carson, Billy the Kid, the Lincoln County Wars, Apache War chefs, and Lt. 'Black Jack' Pershing. It has had many rebirths as a Tuberculosis hospital, a German Interment Camp, and a women's prison. The Fort is located in south central New Mexico between Ruidoso and Capitan. I have chosen the restoration of the beautiful Presbyterian Chapel tin molded ceiling as the focus of my State Project.

WELCOME to the New Mexico State Organization of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution The New Mexico Society was formed with the appointment of Territorial Regent Mrs. Le Baron Bradford Prince in 1894. From that early date to the present we are proud of being a service organization. Our mission is to promote historic preservation, education and patriotism. Our moto is ? ?God, Home, Country? We welcome all women, regardless of race, religion or ethnic background, as long as they are no less than eighteen years of age and can prove lineal descent from an ancestor who aided in achieving American independence. Women must provide documentation for each statement of birth, marriage, and death. We are also very happy and proud of our Spanish Taskforce Committee created here in NMSNSDAR to include descendants of the soldiers of the Presidio of Santa Fe, circa 1750. To get your membership process started, send your e-mail, home address, and whether you are a new or transfer applicant, along with any helpful information, such as whether you have relatives in DAR, to our State Registrar Jennie Fennell. If you have any questions concerning the membership process, we will be happy to assist you! Genora Thornton Moore Canon State Regent, New Mexico Society NSDAR
