Hello all,

Seem to be having an issue with Windows Firewall. Running 7 x64, had Trend Micro Installed. Service expired, threw on Microsoft Security Essentials and now my Win Firewall will not start up. I have tried uninstalling MSE and rebooting in safe mode to no avail.
It keeps telling me to "Update my Firewall Settings" In the control panel, and so I click on Use Recommended Settings, the wait icon pops up and nothing happens.

When I run the Microsoft Fix It it tells me it cannot fix the issue.

When I try to start the Firewall Service in Services.msc I get "Cannot start on local computer see error code 5" and I get event ID 7024 in the Event Viewer.

I have run Avast, Malware Bytes, And a MSE scan. They all come up clean.

Please help!

Thanks

On a computer that is running Windows 7 or Windows Vista, you find that the Windows Firewall service is not running. When you try to manually start the service, you receive the following error message: "Windows could not start the Windows Firewall, DHCP client, or Diagnostic Policy on Local Computer. For more information, review the System Event Log. If this is a non-Microsoft service, contact the service vendor, and refer to service-specific error code 5." Not fixed
Windows Firewall service is not running or is not started. Not fixed

When I run the Fix It.

If you dont have any issues

Download

TFC

Launch it,it will close all running programs

click on START,it should ask for reboot. If TFC locks up the system, run it in safemode

Turn off your system restore, restart the PC,create a new restore point

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Turn-System-Restore-on-or-off

Update your flash player

Update your JAVA from here

http://java.com/en/download/inc/windows_upgrade_xpi.jsp

Update your antivirus frequently,do not click on suspicious links

Safe surfing :)

Don't mean to resurrect an old thread, but I'm compelled to thank narenxp for this post. I'd tried quite a few different suggestions on how to fix my Windows Firewall problem on Windows 7 64-bit, and this was the only that worked for me. Many thanks for such a detailed and easy-to-follow solution. Cheers!

I'm with WhataMack here, I had to reply to this post to say thank you to narenxp. So...thank you narenxp!

Some months ago, my Windows Firewall stopped working for an unknown reason. It wouldn't turn on, and nothing that I found through searches worked. So I decided to go with Zone Alarm Free Firewall. That worked for a while, but recently it started messing up. It slowed my computer, made it act weird, and would not allow some programs to open. I was told by their technical support that the installation had become corrupt and the solution was to do a clean install. Well, I did that, but the next day it started acting up again. I got fed up with it and uninstalled it. Thus began another search for answers to my Windows Firewall woes. It didn't take long before I found this thread (which didn't exist the first time I was troubleshooting). I followed the instructions in narenxp's post and now it works!

Thanks again for the great information!

Narenxp, I am not a user of this site but I just signed up so I could tell you that YOU ARE FRIGGIN AWESOME I have been at this annoying error for more than 3 hours trying to figure out what to do to fix the firewall so I could as so much as to just print a tiny document out and tried so many advise from different sites that did not help me at all! You have been great help and I am happy I stumbled upon this thread. Also if it weren't for the comments I might not have bothered to try your solution!

thanks heaps and god bless!
