Locating the Windows Update Log

The log files have these fields:
Time/Date Stamp, Message Severity, Message Source, Operation Type, and Main Text.

0x80070057  ERROR_INVALID_PARAMETER  The parameter is incorrect. 
0x800B0100  TRUST_E_NOSIGNATURE  No signature was present in the subject. 
0x80092003  CRYPT_E_FILE_ERROR  An error occurred while Windows Update reads or writes to a file. 
0x800B0101  CERT_E_EXPIRED  A required certificate is not within its validity period when verifying against the current system clock or the time stamp in the signed file. 
0x8007371B  ERROR_SXS_TRANSACTION_CLOSURE_INCOMPLETE  One or more required members of the transaction are not present. 
0x80070490 ERROR_NOT_FOUND Windows could not search for new updates.

0x800A138F

Error message when you check for updates on the Windows Update site: "0X800A138F: There are no updates available at this time"

0x800F020B -2146500085 - SPAPI_E_No_Such_Devinst - device instance does not exist
Make sure that the device you’re trying to install the update for is connected to the computer and turned on.


0x800f0823 - This problem occurs because the installation requires a new version of the Windows Modules Installer.

800f0826 - Perhaps a  previous update has failed to install.
Open Windows Update and review your history. Locate the update/s that have failed to install (To view the information about the failed update/s - double-click on the update ). Check each update, if it has error code 800f0826 then keep going until you get a different error code. The update with the different error code is most likely the one that caused the problem and needs to be fixed before you can get other updates.

The state of the update after its post-reboot operation has completed is unexpected


8024401b - Possibly a problem is preventing your proxy server from requesting your network credentials.

  • Start button || All Programs || Windows Update
  • Left pane, click Check for updates.
  • When prompted, provide the credentials that you use to access your network (ie user name and password). If you aren’t prompted, then click “Try again”.

8024402C - When you have a direct Internet connection or connecting to a home network –

  • Open Internet Explorer and click the Tools menu, select Internet Options, click the Connections tab and now click LAN settings.
  • Under Automatic configuration, select the Automatically detect settings check box, and then click OK.

80244022 - Try later as the Servers may be experiencing a high level of demand. Otherwise see: 8024402C


80246007 - Log in as an Administrator and check the Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS).

  • Start button || Control Panel || System and Maintenance || Administrative Tools.
  • Double-click Services
    (Provide the Administrator password or confirmation if prompted to do so.)
  • Right-click Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) service and select Properties.
  • Select General tab – make sure that Startup type is Automatic (Delayed Start)
  • Next to Service status, check to see if the service is started. If it is not, Start.

80246008 - Log on as an administrator and provide the Administrator password or confirmation if prompted to do so and check the Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) and Windows Event Log service settings

  • Start button || Control Panel || System and Maintenance || Administrative Tools.
  • Double-click Services
    (Provide the Administrator password or confirmation if prompted to do so.)
  • Right-click Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) service and select Properties.
  • Select General tab – make sure that Startup type is Automatic (Delayed Start)
  • Next to Service status, check to see if the service is started. If it is not, Start.
  • Right-click the Windows Event Log service, and then click Properties.
    Select General tab and make sure that Startup type is Automatic.
    Next to Service status, check to see if the service is started. If it is not, Start.

0x80070103 - If it is a driver then the driver you are trying to install is already installed or you’re trying to install an older driver.
It is my personal opinion that all drivers should be obtained from the manufacturer's site rather than from Windows Update.

80070422 - Log on as an Administrator –

  • Start button || Control Panel ||System and Maintenance ||Administrative Tools
  • Double-click Services
    (Provide the Administrator password or confirmation if prompted to do so.)
  • Right-click the Windows Update service and select Properties.
    Select General tab – make sure that Startup type is Automatic
    Next to Service status, check to see if the service is started. If it is not, Start.

Another possibility: "Windows modules installer" service is disabled.

  • Start button || Control Panel ||System and Maintenance ||Administrative Tools

  • Double-click Services
    (Provide the Administrator password or confirmation if prompted to do so.)

  • Right-click the "Windows Modules Installer" service, and select Properties.
    Select General tab – make sure that Startup type is Manual.
