APRIL

Coachella Valley Arts & Music Festival

The 2016 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival lineup is now official, and this year's two-weekend extravaganza at the Empire Polo Club in Indio is sure to be one for the ages. Performing live for the first time since 2011, a reunited LCD Soundsystem will kick off the festival on April 15 and perform again on the 22nd. Fans of the James Murphy-led band will no doubt be hoping to hear it perform its first release in five years, "Christmas Will Break Your Heart," which made its debut on Christmas Eve.

The reunion theme continues on April 16 and 23, as Guns N' Roses will headline on consecutive Saturdays. Axl Rose and Slash, the two most prominent members of the acclaimed Los Angeles group, originally joined forces in 1985 but have not performed together since a 1993 concert in Buenos Aires.

Scottish DJ/singer/songwriter Calvin Harris will take top billing for the two Sunday concerts, April 17 and 24, in a roster of acts that includes Sia, Major Lazer, Flume, and Beach House.

Keeping with festival tradition, this year's collection of artists is extremely eclectic, ranging from the Australian singer-songwriter Courtney Barnett to rap icon Ice Cube to the Vandals, a punk band from Huntington Beach. An alphabetized list of all 2016 performers is available here.

Beyond the musical acts, Coachella has morphed into something of a cultural phenomenon, with fantastic food and high-wattage stars showing up in their best desert boho outfits. Artists also present large works, making the event a feast for the eyes as well as the ears—which is part of the reason why nearly 200,000 people attended the 2015 festival.
