“Nice surprise”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 23, 2012

We were booked at one of the major chains but decided we wanted closer to the River Walk. At the last minute I looked at "Choice Hotels" and up popped the O'Brien, part of their historic hotels collection. With AAA discount it was less than half the cost of where we were booked. I did some work on the net to find out if we were booking a flea bag hotel and things sound pretty good. Not fabulous but good.

Here was the surprise. This is VERY nice. The carpet, which had been complained about on other reviews was probably laid the morning of our arrival (they are still working a couple of rooms down). Furniture is clean and nice, flat screen TV, good desk work area, a refrig, good bed, coffee, nice robes, large room that is nicely decorated. Even real coffee cups and GLASS glasses. Nothing "cheap motel" in here except maybe the AC unit. Towels could be better.

We paid $10 extra for a room with a shared balcony which has the added advantage of being behind the building, quiet and away from traffic. The "view" from the balcony is pure parking lot, but it is fine. The bathroom is good, nothing special. Parking is another $10. So for $100 (AAA without taxes) a night we have a VERY nice room, a block from the River Walk with an outdoor space. Try beating that in San Antonio.

Each floor has about 15 rooms. There is a large common sitting area on 2 and especially 3. Breakfast was rated "adequate" by my wife. Plain but OK. She did like the coffee machine which does lattes and espressos and is available all day.

Some other information. A block west on Neuva connects you with another part of the Riverwalk just made for runners and walkers. Head south. Although the surface will be concrete, a peaceful little 5 miler can be had without dodging any traffic or many people, for that matter. And it is mostly in the shade.

We stayed an extra day and bicycled down to the missions. Pieces of the River Walk south are closed up. South of where Roosevelt crosses the river entirely closed. But there were backroads that could be taken and bike paths on busier streets. Bikes can be rented close by (we had our own).

We haven't used our car in the three days we've been here. Walking and bikes, that is a good urban space for me.

Good place, very good.

Room Tip: Back side rooms with a balcony. Third floor if you can. Quiet.

I'm one to do a lot of research before choosing a hotel basing my choice on location, cost, accessibility to activities without a vehicle, and amenities ( wireless, free breakfast, etc) I chose the O'Brien over a couple of others though I did (mentally) question the low rates ($80s) as to if it would be acceptable. As two travelers in our late 60s we easily rode the city bus from the airport to the O'Brien ($1.10 cost)... No taxi or shuttle needed!!! The hotel was one block from San Antonio's Riverwalk and with the fantastic bus & trolley system ($4per day for a hop on/ off ride) we could access from right outside the hotel door. The hotel staff were extremely helpful. This hotel was completely gutted and rebuilt in nearly original condition ( still looks old) in approx 2004 or so) but has up to date conveniences.....LCD tvs, wireless, etc including great breakfast with make your own waffles, cereal, yogurt and more. I couldn't have found a better place for this fiscally conservative guy!!! No pool didn't bother us. Restaurants close by

We stayed just one night. I recommend this hotel with one withdraw. If you have allergies dont go. We all have trouble with the carpets and the a/c. Other than that, you can easily walk to the riverwalk, Alamo, RiverCenter and in our case, very easy to get to the ATT Center by car. Go Spurs!

Wow. Stayed for business. It is rundown, smells musty, horrible stains on carpet, possibly blood on a bench. Yuck. Will never stay here again.

Our room was clean and attractive and very reasonably priced, and to top it off was only a safe, one block walk to Riverwalk. Hotel staff were all very personable and helpful as well. We heard parking could be a challenge so we stayed parked and walked, which was not a problem since everything was close. Perfect weekend - we will definitely will go back - hopefully very soon.

We had a fantastic experience at the O'Brien during our brief one-night visit to San Antonio. We were placed here from a Priceline bid and couldn't have been more pleased. The rooms are very clean and elegant, have quite a charm, and are very spacious. Our front desk manager, Deborah, was extremely helpful and kind. Thanks so much for a wonderful experience!

The O'Brien is a slightly faded hotel in an excellent location to see the sights of San Antonio.
It is in need of a make over and the breakfast is somewhat basic.
Due to it's location it suffers from traffic noise and surprisingly very noisy early morning birds

The Riverwalk is well worth a visit particularly at night and is in easy walking distance of the O'Brien. Walk through La Villita Historic Arts Village and you can walk or take a boat trip around one of the nicest cities in Texas.
