I have the unfortunate duty of announcing that our Water Superintendent, Charlie Abbott, passed away on Thursday. Visitation times are still pending. Charlie had worked for the Village of Dawson for 49 years. He led us through many crises through the years, most recently a significant main break under I-72 and the flooding near the water plant in late December 2015. I recently told Charlie that no one loved Dawson more than he did. Likewise, I don’t think anyone was more beloved by the town more than him. Aside from his paid work for the town, Charlie contributed as a volunteer for years. He served as a firefighter, was instrumental in acquiring and planning the town park, and spent countless hours as a member of the Community Club planning events such as the annual fireworks cel

Aside from his paid work for the town, Charlie contributed as a volunteer for years. He served as a firefighter, was instrumental in acquiring and planning the town park, and spent countless hours as a member of the Community Club planning events such as the annual fireworks celebration. I got to know him after I became Mayor. When I would stop by the Village Hall to take care of paperwork, it was common for him to notice my car and stop by. We would talk business for a few minutes, and then lose track of time laughing and telling stories. He had the utmost respect for all of our town's elected officials, staff, and residents. He has always been a great man and we will all miss him. We are in the beginning stages of planning a dedication and ceremony on his behalf. More details will be announced shortly. For those wondering about the future of Dawson water, we will move forward, but it won’t ever be the same. I had already begun discussions with the EPA in order to keep our plant legal and safe. I have also been collecting applications for Water Superintendent as well as getting details on all of our options moving forward. We will be interviewing Water Superintendent candidates early next week, and then a special meeting of the Village Board will take place to decide our next step. Most people don’t know, but Charlie regularly worked overtime or on holidays and routinely declined the pay that was due to him. I have proposed that all of our elected officials, in a tribute to him, decline our pay for the special meeting. More updates will be coming. For now, please keep the Abbott family in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. Jeremy Nunes Mayor/Village President
