Another gift goal leads to defeat

AFTER once again gifting their opponents an early lead, the Seagulls conceded two more goals before half-time in a 3-0 defeat at Barwell (April 9), which means relegation will be confirmed if we lose at home to Whitby on Tuesday.

An error by keeper Craig Ellison on the edge of his box presented Alex Tomkinson with the chance to stab the ball into an unguarded net after just two minutes.

Ten minutes later the Seagulls lost defender Shaun Dowling after he injured himself saving a certain goal with a last ditch tackle, before Barwell added a second goal with a free header at the far post from a corner by skipper Richard Lavery on 33 minutes.

Jamie Towers added the third a minute before half-time with a well-struck shot from nearly 30 yards, which was the 100th goal in league and cup games that the Bay have conceded this season.

A few players were clearly hampered by injuries, but the side’s performance  improved in the second half when reserve team players Sean Sheridan and Liam Jones were introduced from the bench.

However, apart from a Jack Kelleher effort which was headed off the line, they struggled to create a genuine chance.

At the other end Barwell had two goals disallowed, for a foul and offside, and Ellison made a good one-on-one save from Owen Story.

Overall Barwell had  18 shots at goal, of which 11 were on target (including the two disallowed goals), while the Bay had just seven of which four were on target – Kelleher’s effort plus attempts by Jordan Harper, Carl Lamb and Luke Denson which were all comfortably saved by the keeper.

The Bay were without Stephen Wilson (in hospital) and Brad Bauress (injured) while Adam Morgan and Connor Roberts-Nurse have had their registrations cancelled after failing to show up for Tuesday’s game at Sutton Coldfield.

Colwyn Bay: Craig Ellison, Shaun Dowling (Jordan Fagbola 12mins), Luke Denson, Carl Rodgers (c), Ben Cartwright, Antonie Boland (Liam Jones 61mins), Josh Sumner, Nathan Quirk, Jack Kelleher, Carl Lamb, Jordan Harper (Sean Sheridan 55mins). Subs not used: Andy Farrimond and Adam Carpenter.

Attendance: 156
