The first mention of Atlantis came from Plato, around 2400 years ago , in Timaeus and Critias.
Plato was a renowned philosopher, and mathematician, in Classical Greece, who helped lay the
foundation of Western philosophy. He said that the story was told to the great Athenian statesman,
Solon, (638-558 b.c.e), Egyptian priests, when he visited their country, and that many years
later it was told to him by Critias.
Atlantis was said to be an island in the Atlantic, beyond the Pillars of Heracles, which was
larger than Libya and Asia combined and that the story about it appeared in Egyptian temple records.
Plato describes Atlantis' surrounding area, its city, religion, political and legal authority, and
the make up of its army. Whether or not by coincidence, its alleged layout is similar to concentric
circle symbolism in ancient rock art for Plato says that it consisted of five concentric circles of
land and water around a central island.
The rings of water were bridged and a huge canal extended to the outer ring The palace stood on
the central island where there were temples to the gods and docks for the triremes.
According to Plato, Atlantis had an empire in North Africa which extended to the borders of Egypt
and it later sent out its forces ,from its Atlantic base, to attack the cities of Europe and Asia.
It was opposed by Athens which led an alliance of Greeks. When, its allies deserted her, the
Athenians continued fighting on their own and they overcame the invaders.
The first thing that's obviously wrong with Plato's story is that Athens was not in existence in
the claimed era of Atlantis.
Some scholars suggest that Plato was referring to Santorini, in the
Cyclades Islands ,in the Aegean Sea which, around 3,500 years ago, was the site of one of the
largest volcanic eruptions in recorded history, but Plato says that Atlantis was is the Atlantic
and not in the Mediterranean.
Also the Egyptian priests would have known about the destruction of Santorini, which occurred 900
years before their time, as it affected their country. Thus, in a National Geographic News Report,
2 April 2007, Dan Morrison stated that 'archaeologists had unearthed traces of solidified lava on
the northern coast of Sinai that date to around 1500 b.c-supporting accounts that ancient Egyptian
settlements were buried by a massive volcanic eruption in the Mediterranean'.
Numerous books have been written about Atlantis, from Plato to the present, and various sites have
been proposed for its location such as Spain, the Canary Islands, South America ,and Indonesia,
but none of them fits Plato's description.
So, the alleged war between Athens and Atlantis, some 11,600 years ago, cannot be true and the
eruption of Santorini can be ruled out. Also, around 5,000 years ago, there was substantial flooding
in many parts of the world and Athens , the oldest city in Europe, could not have been destroyed
around that time because that's when its generally thought to date although there may previously
have been a village at the site.
So if there was a conflict between Atlantis and Athens it was not earlier than 5,000 years ago.
From the story of the destruction of Atlantis we continue with the Great Flood, of 5,000 years
ago, as it's of special significance in the second part of this article .
Various sources suggest that not everyone was killed in this catastrophe, as most related
deluge stories suggest. The Jewish historian Josephus relates, in 'The Antiquities of the Jews'
(Chap.1V, that The sons of Noah were three, Shem, Japhet, and Ham born one hundred years before
the deluge.
These first of all descended from the mountains into the plains…..and persuaded others, who were
greatly afraid of lower grounds on account of the flood, and were loth to come down from the
higher places to venture to follow their example.
Is there any evidence to support the claim that many people survived the great flood that occurred 5,000 years ago?
Yes there is.
Thor Heyerdahl states that around that time the Neolithic sites in Crete came to an end and a
new age began. The entire island was affected by a major upheaval which appears to have been
so intense that people sought refuge in caves and settled on high hills. Around 5,000 years
ago, many tribes around the world were on the move and several civilisations emerged fully developed.
Major changes also occurred in Egypt when its civilisation has been dated. Egypt, however, was
not affected by the Flood.
In many regions in the Early World, such as the Ancient Middle East, Northern Europe and Central
Asia, neighbouring civilisations had similar religious traditions, and legends, and this is also
happened in Central America some of whose legends were popular among the Hopi in south-west North
America. If we lump the important ones together a fascinating picture begins to emerge.
The Kiche Maya, most of whom live in the highlands of Guatemala, have roots dating back to the
Ancient Maya and they say that the third, and previous, age was destroyed by a flood because
people had become wicked. The present age ,according to the Mayan calendar, began in 3,114 B.C.E .
The Hopi say that the people of the third age became evil. Some built a flying machine and used
it to attack a city. Soon others were making them and were attacking their enemies.
The third age came to a watery end, when it was destroyed by the creator god Sotuknang, and
the survivors emerged into the present fourth age.
Although it makes no mention of the deluge, the Aztec origin legend appears to be related to
the story of the Hopi emergence from the third age into the fourth. The Aztecs said that they
came from an island called Atzlan. But the only details they gave of this land was portrayed
in mystical symbolism that's associated with the 'star-gods.'
Throughout the Early World, people had legends about these divine beings and they were regarded
as gods in religions both in the Old and New Worlds. They were alleged to have been of human
appearance and some people associated them with the Pleiades. Over the years, these 'star-god'
legends were the origin of many folk stories.
This includes some present day adventure stories and famous films.
However, their original significance has long since been forgotten
In the summer of 1980, when I was interested in psychic research, I was present at a series
of channelled messages, through the late medium Gerry Sherrick, which got me involved in
investigating the Ancient Astronaut theory. One of the 'entities', who communicated with us,
introduced himself as the famous American psychic Edgar Cayce.
Of the 2, 500 life readings, that Cayce gave for approximately 1600 people, 700 on record
mention an earlier life in Atlantis.
This was what I was told:
'Contrary to what others had to say, the country or continent of Atlantis existed. People
lived and loved and worked. I have written, and I have spoken to people who lived in this
continent of Atlantis. Since I left my body and passed into the etheric plane, I have been
able to learn much and observe much through the libraries that exist on the etheric plane.
I would say, perhaps in the next fifty years, contact will be made between the people of
your earth and people of a higher galaxy. There has been much talk of this coming together,
sharing of knowledge, and sharing of wisdom.
We can assure you that there was definitely a landing of an alien people on this earth.
We can assure you that laser beams, machines, and airplanes existed before the time of the
floods.
We can assure you that the Bible's books start at the beginning which was really the end
of another civilization. We can assure you, my brother, that these people came in peace.
They will come again in peace, but they cannot come until this earth plane has stabilized
itself. And when they come, they will bring with them the knowledge and the wisdom that
their fathers brought to this earth before them'.
A claim that there was at least one pre-deluge civilisation has been
found in the earliest known writings, i.e that of the Sumerians, who
said their people arrived in Sumer, in Southern Iraq, from a flood
destroyed land. They also said that the Flood was caused by the
Annunaki. But that's another story.
Conclusions:
Plato was born in the era of the long Peloponnesian War when Athens fought a series of battles
against Sparta (431 b.c - 404 bc) and it's likely that he wrote the story about a conflict
between Athens and Atlantis to glorify the Athenians who sometimes suffered defeats at the
hands of their enemy. It's therefore very unlikely that we will ever know if a civilisation
of his description existed.
It would appear that the Aztecs adopted their Aztlan story from the great teachers and artisans,
the Toltecs, ( the builders), whose origin, and actual name, is unknown. Were they the
fair-skinned people with flowing yellow hair, and the other white people, depicted in murals at
the Temple of the Warriors in Chichen Itza?
I had the pleasure of visiting the 2,000 year old city of Teotihuacan many years ago but it
was only recently that I realised that I had seen a stone version of the symbolism that the Aztecs
used to represent Atzlan . According to Dr Rene Millon, who supervised the University of Rochester' s
Teotihuacan mapping project, this site is aligned to the setting of the Pleiades on the
beginning of the Mayan Long Count which corresponds with the year 3114 b.c.e.
This suggests that Atzlan was the claimed place of origin of the Teotihuacans, that it dates back
5,000 years, to the era of the Flood, and that it was linked with the Pleiades. The identity of
the founders of Teotihuacan is unknown but it's not unlikely that the mysterious Toltecs were
amongst its numerous citizens.
When I was researching the Stone Age, I discovered the Atzlan linked, 'star-god,' symbolism
thousands of miles away in at least two of the '5,000 year old' mounds in Stone Age Ireland.
Was it linked with the religious beliefs of the mysterious Tuatha de Danann who had mystical
powers and who came to Ireland from four mythical cities? Although some said that they arrived
from the north, others believed that they came from the southern isles of the world.
And as they descended from the sky,it would appear that, like people in the previous age
Hopi legend, they had flying craft.
One thing that's often overlooked, in Plato's story, is that it contains an obscure reference
to the Pleiades which can only be appreciated from an interpretation of certain aspects Egyptian
religion. The appearance of these stars preceded the start of major festivals in Celtic Ireland.
They played an important role in Aztec ritual at the end of each 52 year cycle, and at the end of
the Mayan Long Count Calendar, and some people believed they were the source of all creation.
We will never know if Atzlan was the island which Plato called Atlantis but if it was then it
appears to have been destroyed by the flood 5,000 years ago.
