The Arctic is a vast, ice-covered ocean, surrounded by tree-less, frozen ground, that teems with life, including organisms living in the ice, fish and marine mammals, birds, land animals and human societies.

Daily sea ice extent updates resumed with provisional data |
From the NSIDC: On April 12, 2016, NSIDC announced suspension of sea ice time series updates due to issues with data from a sensor on the DMSP F17 satellite that resulted in erroneous estimates of sea ice concentration and extent. The problem was initially seen in data for April 5 and all data since then are unreliable, so the NSIDC chose to remove all of April from NSIDC’s archive. On May 6, 2016, NSIDC announced that daily sea ice extent updates were resumed, using provisional data from the DMSP F18 satellite from April 1, 2016 onwards. Because these are provisional data, the Sea Ice Index has not been updated since March 31. NSIDC expects to make calibrated DMSP F-18 satellite data available soon. |
