2014 Radiation Source Protection and Security Task Force Report to the President and the U.S. Congress

The 2014 report provides recommendations to the President and Congress to improve the security of domestic radioactive sources giving the enduring threat of terrorists seeking radioactive materials to attack the United States. The report indicates that by far the most significant challenge identified is access to disposal for disused radioactive sources. The Task Force recommends that DOE continue its ongoing efforts to develop a GTCC disposal capability. Transcripts of Public Scoping Meetings Available

As part of the scoping phase of the EIS process, the U.S. Department of Energy, Office of Environmental Management (EM), held public scoping meetings to obtain scoping comments for the EIS in nine cities in Idaho, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, South Carolina, Tennessee, Washington, and Washington D.C. in August and September of 2007. Transcripts of public scoping meetings are available for downloading and browsing below.

U.S. Department of Energy to Host Public Scoping Meetings to Discuss the Notice of Intent to Prepare an Environmental Impact Statement for the Disposal of Greater-Than-Class C Low-Level Radioactive Waste

The Department of Energy (DOE) is conducting nine public scoping meetings in several states to provide the public with an opportunity to comment on the scope of the EIS and to learn more about the proposed action from DOE officials. All meetings (except the Washington DC meeting) will start at 6 p.m. with an informal poster session and opportunity to sign-in to provide oral comments. A formal presentation by DOE officials on the proposed action will start at 7 p.m. followed by public comments. The Washington DC meeting will start at 1 p.m. with the formal presentation by DOE officials starting at 2 p.m. Meeting locations are available on this website.

Greater-Than-Class C Low-Level Radioactive Waste EIS Public Information Center Web Site Launched

The Greater-Than-Class C Low-Level Radioactive Waste EIS Information Center Web site was launched on July 20, 2007. This Web site is the online center for public information and involvement in the Greater-Than-Class C Low-Level Radioactive Waste Environmental Impact Statement (GTCC LLRW EIS).

The United States Department of Energy (DOE), Office of Environmental Management (EM), will prepare an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for disposal of Greater-Than-Class C Low-Level Radioactive Waste (GTCC LLRW). The EIS will evaluate potential alternatives involving selected disposal methods for application at several DOE sites.
