Status update: November 10, 2014

Despite heroic efforts by our system administration staff, we were unable to recover imagery from the failed RAID.

However, imagery from the entire MODIS record for both Aqua and Terra, including the imagery lost in this RAID failure, will be generated during the Collection 6 MODIS reprocessing.

This includes imagery for the layers available in the Rapid Response subsets as well as all the addition layers available in Worldview and GIBS.

Again, we strongly encourage our users to take a look at the NASA imagery available through Worldview and the Global Imagery Browse Services (GIBS) (see information below).

Status as of: December 20, 2013

On December 10, 2013, a large disk array containing several years of imagery (Near real-time (Orbit Swath) and MODIS Subset Images) suffered a hardware failure. This disk contained imagery from about January 2011 to mid-December 2013. A small portion of this imagery is still viewable and we are working to recover more of it but, at present, the prognosis for additional recovery is very uncertain.

Another disk has been added and the current imagery from December 11, 2013 (day of year 345) forward is available.

Here are some options to view/download the same imagery for part of the missing time period:

1. Our interactive web imagery viewer, Worldview.
2. The imagery viewed in Worldview are also available as a Web Map Tile Service (WMTS), supplied by the Global Imagery Browse Services (GIBS).

We are strongly encouraging our users with a good Internet connection to switch to using Worldview and/or GIBS instead of the Rapid Response imagery. These access methods are much faster and also provide a much larger selection of NASA imagery products from MODIS and other instruments.

Imagery for Worldview/GIBS are available from 8 May 2012 to the present for the global images and beginning 6 June 2013 for the Arctic and Antarctic. (Arctic and Antarctic imagery are also available from 8 May 2012 to 5 June 2013 but they are in a different projection that is being deprecated.)

MODIS imagery for the complete mission (back to 2000 for Terra and 2002 for Aqua) will be generated during the data reprocessing which will take place over the course of 2014. This complete imagery record will be available for Rapid Response (for low Internet band width users), Worldview, and GIBS.
