Geospatial Intelligence (GEOINT) Standards consist of technical specifications or other precise criteria to be used
consistently as rules, guidelines, or definitions of characteristics of GEOINT to ensure that materials, products, processes,
or services are fit for the analysis and visual representations of physical features and geographically referenced activities
on the Earth.
The National System for Geospatial Intelligence (NSG) Standards Registry supports the discovery, traceability, and
lifecycle management of GEOINT Standards that may be used in the development and operation of data- and net-centric GEOINT
applications. There are three basic methods that may be used to locate and employ its content:
The site as a whole provides thematic entry-points organized by business, mission, or management perspectives.
These entry points are accessible through the Overview tab at the top of this page.
All of the actual "standards-content" is stored in sets of registers that individually support content-organization
and lifecycle-management of information items (e.g., the lifecycle status of: valid, superseded, retired). These "technical"
entry points are accessible through the Registers tab at the top of this page.
All of the content of a registry may be consistently browsed or searched, regardless of in which register the item is
located. These "discovery" entry points are accessible through the
Explore tab at the top of this page.
Community members who are participating in the lifecycle management of the content of this NSG Standards Registry
may access additional capabilities through the Login tab at the top of this page.
The NSG Standards Registry is maintained by the
Geospatial Intelligence Standards Working Group (GWG) as a service to
the NSG community. The GWG is Chartered under the Department of Defense (DoD)
and Intelligence Community (IC) Joint Enterprise Standards Committee (JESC), the governing group responsible for recommending common
Information Technology (IT) enterprise standards for standards-based implementation of the enterprise architecture to enable
interoperability and to ensure information sharing and safeguarding. The GWG provides the forum for the coordination of GEOINT
standards for the NSG. It is led and chaired by the
NGA National Center for Geospatial Intelligence
The GWG serves as the GEOINT community advocate for IT standardization activities related to
GEOINT and assists the Director of the NGA in carrying out Functional Manager responsibilities for GEOINT standards.
The primary responsibilities of the GWG are to:
- Coordinate population of the DoD IT Standards Registry (DISR) and Intelligence Community (IC) Enterprise Standards Baseline with GEOINT standards, and
- Serve as the NSG community forum for all standardization activities and functions related to GEOINT.
The GWG consists of chartered focus groups made up of subject matter experts that address topical issues
related to GEOINT standards.
