You can renew your driver license or ID card up to twelve months before the expiration date and one year after the expiration date (unless you qualify for a military exemption*).
If your card is expired over one year you will have to apply for an original driver license or ID card.
* If your card is expired over one year while serving active duty in the United States Armed Forces it remains eligible for renewal up to six months after you are discharged.

If you are temporarily outside of the state and cannot come to an Oregon DMV office, you may call DMV at (503) 945-5000.
DMV mails renewal reminders two months before your card expires. If you do not receive a renewal reminder in the mail, you are still required to renew your license or ID card in person at a DMV office before it expires.
After you meet the requirements for renewal, you will be given an interim card to use until you receive your permanent card in the mail.
Your card will be mailed to your address on file with DMV. It is important that you give DMV the address where you receive your mail since cards are not forwarded by the post office. If you have a forwarding order or hold order on your address your card will be returned to DMV as undeliverable.
If you surrender a previous driver license, instruction permit or ID card, it will be invalidated and returned to you. The invalidated card is not valid by itself, but may be used as additional proof of identity with the interim card. |
