Recommendation Eight
Takes Center Stage


There are many factors involved in school safety, health, and resilience for students. A safe, respectful, and positive school environment communicates caring and minimizes fears that might interfere with learning. A safe school climate includes a safe and clean school facility, caring teachers, and caring, respectful relationships with peers. This recommendation is based on the premise that prevention is the key to healthy students and safe schools.


Safe Schools
The California Department of Education Web site contains numerous pages that provide helpful resources to assist teachers and administrators with building resilience in students by strengthening protective factors and developmental assets, improving school safety, and preventing campus violence. The Coordinated School Health and Safety office provides (training) resources and technical assistance to establish a school/community environment which is physically and emotionally safe, well disciplined, and conducive to learning. The Safe Schools Planning page provides information intended to help schools identify elements and resources important in imporiving school climate and safety. The School Safety Plan Self-Monitoring Tool includes a list of required contents to assist schools in creating a compliant plan.


California Health Kids Resource Center (CHKRC). The CHKRC maintains a comprehensive collection of health materials that are available for loan from the CHKRC library, with free delivery in California. The materials include: curricula, DVDs, teacher reference and research materials, as well as models and other displays. In addition. Team California for Healthy Kids is a resource for making healthy choices. Team California's goal is to promote healthy eating and physical activity through out the day, every day, in schools, to ensure a bright and healthy future for kids.

Dropout Prevention: A Focus on the Middle Grades. An issue brief published by the National High School Center presents an overview of research related to dropout prevention and provides a tool designed to help prep high school educators identify students and implement interventions. The early warning system provides the research and theoretical framework to help schools think through how their existing data and interventions can be integrated to identify and respond to at-risk students. An effort is under way to adapt the tool for use in the middle grades.
