What is the Solid Waste Information System?

The Solid Waste Information System (SWIS) is a data management system for tracking the flow and disposal of solid waste generated in the Metro region of Portland, Oregon, USA. SWIS was established in 1989 by an ordinance of the Metro Regional Government Council and serves a variety of Metro’s legal, financial, regulatory, planning and administrative requirements related to solid waste.

The Website

The SWIS website was launched on July 1, 2012. Eventually, the site will provide a range of tools for filing and reporting data and reports on solid waste and recycling throughout the region.

At present, the SWIS website supports only an electronic-file function – a secure portal through which Metro’s regulated community can file confidential monthly reports on solid waste activities, and through which solid waste facilities can file their fee and tax returns and remit payments.
