What We Do

Whether you’re looking to experience a symphony performance, explore a state park, visit a museum exhibit, find a fun family event, encounter creatures from all over the world at the zoo or step back in time at an historic site, you’re at the right place! If you’re interested in discovering your family’s genealogy, exploring North Carolina history, experiencing our state's rich natural beauty, consulting with our historic preservation experts or learning how you can preserve your family treasures, we can help you with that too! In fact, Natural and Cultural Resources does a lot more.

Natural and Cultural Resources is all about what’s happening today in the arts and music, but also about what’s happened in the past to get us here and preserving our state's scenic splendor. We’re home to 27 historic sites, seven history museums, two art museums, two science museums, three aquariums and Jennette's Pier, 39 state parks and recreation areas, the N.C. Zoo, the N.C. Symphony, the State Library, the State Archives, the N.C. Arts Council, State Preservation Office and the Office of State Archeology.

Led by Secretary Susan Kluttz, our mission is to improve the quality of life in North Carolina by creating opportunities that promote economic development, stimulate learning, preserve the state’s history, spark creativity and conserve the state's natural heritage to experience excellence in the arts, history, libraries and nature. Our organization was the first in the nation to include all state agencies for arts and culture under one umbrella.

This site is your starting point to discover all Natural and Cultural Resources has to offer. Welcome.
