A Week in the Life of a Research Attorney in Sonoma County: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Rules of Court

Ever wonder what goes on behind the scenes of at the courthouse? This program will provide some insight into the nuts and bolts of the legal research department at the Sonoma County Superior Court. The presentation will walk through a typical week (a rare event to be sure!) for a research attorney at the court. The presentation will also discuss best practices for motions from the perspective of a research attorney, and highlight some common procedural pitfalls we see on a weekly basis.

English, Kenneth

Kenneth G. English
Supervising Research Attorney
Superior Court of California, County of Sonoma

Ken English, Esq. is the supervising research attorney for the Sonoma County Superior Court. Prior to his employment with the court, Mr. English worked for a couple of law firms—emphasizing civil litigation with a sprinkling of “everything else”. Mr. English is a graduate of The George Washington University Law School in Washington, D.C.—graduating with honors. While at law school, Ken was a Thurgood Marshall Scholar and a research assistant to Prof. Andrew Spanogle. Also during law school, Ken interned with the Anne Arundel County Circuit Court and the General Counsel for the U.S. Department of the Treasury, and worked at a law firm in D.C. in his spare time. After law school, Ken clerked for the Hon. Alan B. Johnson, in the Federal District Court in Wyoming. While there Ken worked on a variety of matters including the State of Wyoming’s challenge to the U.S. government’s decision not to delist the gray wolf as an endangered species. (See State of Wyoming, et al. v. The United States, et al., 360 F.Supp.2d 1214 (D. Wyo., 2005) affirmed by State of Wyoming et al. v. U.S. Dept. of Interior, 442 F.3d 1262 (10th Cir. (Wyo.) 2006).)

Unlawful Detainers: From Notice to Writ

The landlord-tenant statutes can prove challenging for both landlords and tenants. In a tight rental market, both landlords and tenants need to be careful about how they approach an eviction notice and possible unlawful detainer action. Caution needs to be especially exercised given the advent of “rent control” in Santa Rosa. This seminar will provide suggestions for successfully complying with the unlawful detainer statutory scheme, from how termination notices are prepared and served correctly, through best practices for preparing the pleadings, challenging the pleadings, and handling an unlawful detainer trial in the Sonoma County Superior Court.
