What’s his background?
Gomes has an interesting background. He is the cousin of former United star Luis Nani, while his father, Gil, was born in Angola but moved to Portugal as a youngster, later becoming part of Benfica’s famed academy. Gil played for Portugal at youth level and went on to enjoy a decent club career across Europe, with the likes of Ovarense, Tours and Braga. He moved to England in 2000 towards the end of his career and played for Hendon, Hyde United and Salford City.
Angel was born in London in 2000 during his dad’s time at Hendon. Having shown immense promise from a tender age, he joined Manchester United’s academy aged 13.
How’s Angel been doing at Manchester United?
Very well. He was moved up to Under-15 level shortly after joining the club, and has played above his age group throughout his time in the United academy. He is currently part of the Under-18 squad, and shortly before his 16th birthday in August became the youngest player to score a hat-trick for United at academy level in 15 years. His treble, against Everton U-18s, was all the more impressive considering he started the match on the bench.
What type of player is he?
Skilful, creative, assured in possession, and with a penchant for spectacular goals, he has been likened to Brazilian legend Ronaldinho. No pressure there, then! Check out some of his skills and goals in the video below.
What country will he play for?
He is eligible to play for Angola and Portugal but appears committed to playing for the country of his birth, having represented England at various youth levels. He is the current captain of the Under-17 side and recently starred – and scored – in the Young Lions’ stunning 8-1 victory over their German counterparts in the Croatia Cup.
What does the future hold?
Recent newspaper reports have claimed Barcelona are desperate to lure Gomes to Spain, but he is under contract until 2018 and his father, Gil, recently said it was his son’s ‘dream’ to play for United's senior side. So it is surely just a matter of time before we see him in Jose Mourinho’s squad. United legend and academy chief Nicky Butt certainly thinks he is a future United star, recently saying: “We've got some unbelievable players. Angel Gomes is a young talented player we've massive hopes for."
