Biography

After winning the 5,000m at the Final Trials, Hal Brown reached the Olympic final at this distance but did not finish the race. Five days later, he led the field home in the 3,000m team event when the U.S., with three men in the first six, took the gold medals. He also won the IC4A 2 mile title in 1920. Brown entered Williams College in 1915, but his studies were interrupted when he went to France in 1917 to serve in World War I. Serving initially as an ambulance driver, he later saw active service as a pilot and aerial gunner He was commissioned in 1918, returned to Williams in 1919, and graduated with the Class of 1920. Brown was a seismologist and worked for many years with the Geotechnical Corp. of Dallas.
