After the Finnish domination of the steeplechase before World War II, the Swedes rose to the top level during the War and were the dominant force just after the War as they took silver and bronze at the 1946 European Championships and the top three places the London Olympics. Tore Sjöstrand from Huddinge rose onto the international athletics scene after winning a bronze medal at the 1946 European Championships. At the London Olympics the three Swedes, Sjöstrand, [Erik Elmsäter] and [Göte Hagström] were the class of the field. With an astonishing last lap of 69.6, Sjöstrand won the race, beating world record holder Elmsäter by 3.6 seconds. At the 1950 European Championships Sjöstrand managed to finish only eighth and retired from sports after that. Domestically he won two Swedish 3,000 steeple titles in 1947-48.
