Johannesburg - Cartoon Network is proud to announce that they have teamed up with Toya Delazy, one of South Africa’s most dynamic jazz-electro-hip-pop muso’s, to create an all African, localised theme song for the re-launch of Cartoon Network’s most enduring original series, The Powerpuff Girls.
The show will launch on television screens across the continent, exclusively on DStv channel 301 starting on Saturday, 30 April at 10:55.
Toya chats about the new theme song, tells how it matches her personality and what she would tell Powerpuff Girls.
The juxtaposition of “Super cute vs super fierce” that The Powerpuff Girls represent sparked this musical journey for me. The Powerpuff Girls are cute, but they’re also kick-ass, funny and fierce – they have very different personalities and characteristics but their no-nonsense cool-factor made me want to be part of their team. The energy and positive values of this new opening song make this track as catchy as can be.
US indie pop band, Tacocat, recorded the new theme song for the global launch of the all new The Powerpuff Girls series and when I was approached to localise the theme song for the African market, and I heard the original song, I instantly connected with the lyrics: fighting crime and saving the world before bedtime was my childhood dream. I am so excited to be part of the new Powerpuff Girl team!
If I had to describe the sound of Powerpuff Girls meeting Toya Delazy, I would say a burst of eclectic awesomeness resembling the energies of the characters. There's a bit of rock, hop and sweet undertones, so a hard yet playful beat.
Absolutely the show matches my personality! The animation and storylines are super creative and visually exciting and I like to think that my artistic universe is just as colourful and punchy. I also love the feistiness of the The Powerpuff Girls and the idea that they are tough enough to outmatch villains. What’s more, just as Blossom, Bubbles and Buttercup juggle school, homework and a regular parade of villains, I too juggle music, work, family and friends and a very busy schedule. Just like The Powerpuff Girls are always up to the task, so am I!
If I had to trade places with one of the Powerpuff Girls for 24 hours, it would definitely be Bubbles, the heart of the Powerpuff Girls … I have a soft heart, am sensitive and artistic just like her, but of course don't get on my wrong side, we can both take down a monster with one adorable punch!
My Powerpuff Girl power is the ability to unite people with music, irrespective of geographic location or demographic. People connect with the music I make. I use it for all sorts of things like talking about my feelings, empowerment, awareness or just a good party thumper where you can let your hair down and get low.
Yes, just like the Powerpuff Girls, I am all about empowerment. From my first single Pump it on to songs like Memoriam, Forbidden fruit or Why hate, it's all about making sure that our community that we love is protected, soothed and aware. Music is therapeutic and makes life better.
My sugar and spice and all things nice ingredients are humour, feist and melody. I love laughing - if you can make me laugh, I want you around me! Feist, because I'm determined and believe in myself. I'm not afraid to walk in a direction different from the masses. And lastly, melody, because music is an ingredient that gives me most of my flavour - melody is at my core.
Yo Powerpuff Girls! Thanks for making my childhood dope! Because of you, I grew up knowing that girls can become something great and don't have to be pushed around. As you grow and inspire other girls, just keep doing your thing!
I loved Cartoon Network as a kid! The Powerpuff Girls was one of my favourites, alongside Cow and Chicken, Dexter’s Lab and Johnny Bravo, to name a few. Cartoon Network represents funny, out of the box and intelligent cartoons. I binged on Cartoon Network when I was growing up, it has the best cartoons!
