GameSpot said for the PS2 version, "Test Drive Off-Road Wide Open is definitely worth a look for fans of racing games and fans of big-block trucks." GameSpot also rated the game 7.6 (good). For the Xbox, GameSpot said, "Despite its rather humdrum graphics and sound, it manages to provide a thrilling experience for the first several hours." They gave this version a score of 6.8 (fair).
