Angels Notes: RHP Brooks Pounders acquired from Royals
The Angels acquired right-hander Brooks Pounders from the Kansas City Royals in exchange for minor league right-hander Jared Ruxer on Thursday.
The Angels will bring Pounders to camp as a starting pitcher, general manager Billy Eppler said. Pounders was a starter for most of his pro career before pitching mostly in relief last season. Presumably, Pounders adds depth to the Triple-A rotation.
Pounders, 26, has a career 3.77 ERA in the minors, including a 3.14 mark in 80 1/3 innings at Triple-A last season. He pitched 12 2/3 innings in the majors, allowing 13 earned runs.
Pounders, a product of Temecula High, was the Pirates second-round pick in 2009.
Ruxer, 24, has a 3.45 ERA in two minor league seasons. He was the Angels' 12th-round pick in 2014.
In order to create a spot on the 40-man roster for Pounders, the Angels designated left-hander Cody Ege for assignment.
ALSO
The Angels hired David Newhan as minor league infield coordinator and Jeremy Reed as the minor league hitting coordinator. Newhan, who played parts of eight seasons in the majors, is a product of Esperanza High in Anaheim. He played at Cypress College, Georgia Tech and Pepperdine. Reed played at Bonita High and Long Beach State before a pro career that included parts of eight seasons in the majors.
