Our Promise to the Planet

By Jove! Aren’t we lucky to be graced by the stunning landscape of Devon, with its lush rolling countryside and beautiful coastline? We understand the pressing issues facing our delightful planet and, by striving to reduce food miles and save energy, we’re doing our best to reduce our impact. We share our proud ethos with our guests to encourage them to help.

Saving Energy & Water

We've turned our ways to renewable energy with the installation of a new biomass boiler which will dramatically reduce the amount of unsustainable energy we use.

I must say, with 80 acres of grounds to maintain, there are rows of thirsty plants to satisfy, particularly in the summer months! Numerous water butts are dotted throughout the grounds to assist with the demand for thirst in the warmer months.

Recycling

With a 'zero waste to landfill' policy, we're sorting and recycling all of our waste including paper, plastics and we’re crushing our own glass on the premises. We’re also recycling the food waste which is composted and transferred to local National Trust gardens including Killerton House. How frightfully good!

Reducing Food Miles

We try to source as much local produce from neighbouring farms and regional suppliers. We're not only passionate about supporting local producers but we're keen on keeping our carbon footprint to a minimum.

Our recently restored walled garden is providing fresh, daily produce for the kitchen, just like it did for the former Squire family back in the 13th Century. We're also lucky enough to be graced by some top notch volunteers to help us maintain the garden and produce.

Our two bee hives are producing delicious honey for breakfast (it really is the bees knees!), we're getting the freshest eggs from our very own hens and we've pressed our own apple juice ...and it's truly scrumptious!

Local Transport

Where possible, we'd recommend you take the train to nearby attractions, hop on the bus to the coast, get on your bike to explore the local villages and to pull on the wellie boots for a stomp around the grounds.

East Devon AONB Ambassador

We're very proud to be supporting the aims and objectives of the East Devon AONB Partnership, assisting in conserving the landscape, helping local communities and keeping other top notch East Devon businesses in our rural economy flourishing!
