Kjell William Alf Samuelsson

In a draft year that saw Mario Lemieux go number one, Kjell Samuelsson was taken by the New York Rangers 119th overall, although down the road Kjell would join Mario and the Penguins for a Stanley Cup championship in 1992.

Samuelsson played 39 games with the Rangers before being traded to the Philadelphia Flyers. The 1987-88 season saw Samuelsson reach career highs in assists, 24, and points, 30, and play in the NHL All-Star Game. After three more seasons with the Flyers, Samuelsson was sent to the Pittsburgh Penguins during their drive for a second straight Stanley Cup in the 1991-92 season. Samuelsson won his only Cup with the Penguins that season and played with the Pens for three more seasons.

When Samuelsson became a free agent in 1995 he went back to Philadelphia to play for the Flyers. He remained in Philly until 1999 and then spent one season with the Tampa Bay Lightning before retiring.

Samuelsson began his coaching career the next season as an assistant coach with the ECHL's Trenton Titans. He returned to Philadelphia in 2000 with the Flyers farm team the Phantoms as an assistant coach.

Traded to Pittsburgh by Philadelphia with Rick Tocchet, Ken Wregget and Philadelphia's 3rd round pick (Dave Roche) in 1993 NHL Draft for Mark Recchi, Brian Benning and Los Angeles' 1st round pick (previously acquired, Philadelphia selected Jason Bowen) in 1992 NHL Draft, February 19, 1992. Signed as a free agent by Philadelphia, August 31, 1995. Signed as a free agent by Tampa Bay, October 14, 1998.
