SAN ANTONIO - A challenger has entered the race for mayor of San Antonio.
District 8 Councilman Ron Nirenberg announced his bid for mayor Saturday, but it came as no surprise to KSAT12 News. A source had confirmed to the station last week that Nirenberg would run against incumbent Ivy Taylor.
Nirenberg was first elected to the District 8 seat in 2013 and was re-elected in 2015. Over the last three years, the councilman has focused on challenges such as improving transportation infrastructure, embracing new technology and creating jobs.
Nirenberg said the next few years are going to have a dramatic impact on our city.
"Every initiative needs to be directed by outcomes — lowering the crime rate, helping us to make sure that we have staffing and equipment in place for the future in a sustainable matter," Nirenberg said.
Taylor, who is running for re-election, offered her thoughts on her first challenger.
"I certainly look forward to a vigorous debate on how we can provide leadership for San Antonio, but I think it's evident that I've been able to provide solutions, not sound bites," Taylor said, referring to her track record of accomplishments since she's been mayor.
So far, only Nirenberg and Taylor have publicly announced they are running for mayor. However, last week, Bexar County Democratic Chairman Manuel Medina said he may also throw his hat into the ring.
The election is slated for May 6, 2017.
