Breast Cancer Awareness: Congresswoman Maloney teamed up with Congressman Pete Sessions (TX-32) and Senators Heidi Heitkamp (D-ND) and Kelly Ayotte (R-NH) to enact the Breast Cancer Awareness Commemorative Coin Act, which was signed by President Obama on April 29, 2016. The bill establishes a commemorative coin program at the U.S. Mint that has the potential to raise an estimated $8.5 million in private funds for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, the highest rated breast cancer organization in the U.S. Coins will be available for purchase in 2018.
Skin Cancer Prevention: In 2007, Congresswoman Maloney introduced the Tanning Accountability and Notification (TAN) Act, which required the Food and Drug Administration to determine whether the current labeling of indoor tanning beds provides sufficient information about the risks associated with indoor tanning. WASHINGTON, DC — Today Reps. Henry A. Waxman, Diana DeGette, Frank Pallone, Jr., Rosa L. DeLauro, and Carolyn B. Maloney released a report prepared by the minority staff of the Committee on Energy and Commerce, describing the false and misleading health information provided to teens by the indoor tanning industry. The report, based on undercover interviews of tanning salon employees conducted by Committee investigators, finds that tanning salons target teenage girls with advertising and promotions, deny known risks of indoor tanning, provide false information on benefits of tanning, and fail to follow recommendations by the Food and Drug Administration on tanning frequency.

Carolyn Maloney (D-Manhattan, Queens), former Congresswoman Elizabeth Holtzman, and New York State Assembly Member Brian Kavanagh (D-Manhattan) today urged the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to take action following a recent report in the American Journal of Public Health (attached) showing that women have a 47% greater chance of suffering severe injuries in car crashes than do men - even when wearing seat belts.
Today, U.S. Senators Charles E. Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand and U.S. Representatives Carolyn Maloney, Joe Crowley, Peter King, Charles Rangel, and Steve Israel announced that they have successfully secured a Medicare payment improvement resulting in Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC) receiving $28 million more each year from the federal government to provide state-of-the-art cancer care to New Yorkers. MSKCC is the world’s oldest and largest private cancer center, and one of the leading cancer centers in the United States. Due to technological and scientific advancements, which many MSKCC clinicians and researchers have played an important role, more and more cancer patients are receiving care in an outpatient setting instead of inpatient hospital stays. But payment from the federal government for this type of care has been woefully inadequate and out-of-date, creating a funding challenge for hospitals like MSKCC to advance high quality cancer care to patients.
