 USGS Puerto Rico Science Highlights

Sedimentation survey of Lago Caonillas, Utuado, Puerto Rico,
September–November 2012

Sedimentation survey of Lago Caonillas, Utuado, Puerto Rico, September–November 2012During September–November 2012, the U.S. Geological Survey, in cooperation with the Puerto Rico Aqueduct and Sewer Authority, conducted a sedimentation survey of Lago Caonillas to estimate current (2012) reservoir storage capacity and the recent (2000–2012) reservoir sedimentation rate by comparing the 2012 bathymetric survey data with the February 2000 data. The Lago Caonillas storage capacity, which was 42.27 million cubic meters in February 2000, decreased to 39.55 million cubic meters by September–November 2012. The intersurvey (2000–2012) storage capacity loss was about 6 percent, corresponding to a decrease of about 0.5 percent per year; this loss represents a reservoir sedimentation rate of about 226,670 cubic meters per year between 2000 and 2012. On a long-term basis, however, the sedimentation rate has remained nearly constant, decreasing from about 257,500 to 251,720 cubic meters per year during 1948–2000 and 1948–2012, respectively.

WaterWatch is a USGS website that displays maps, graphs, and tables describing real-time, recent, and past streamflow conditions for the United States. The real-time information generally is updated on an hourly basis. WaterWatch provides streamgage-based maps that show the location of long-term (30 years or more) USGS streamgages; use colors to represent streamflow conditions compared to historical streamflow. « Recent Newsletters

Newsletter cover, Summer 2016The USGS Caribbean-Florida Water Science Center (CFWSC) Newsletter offers information about recent activities of the CFWSC. The CFWSC has more than 130 scientists, technicians, and support personnel in six offices that collect, interpret, and publish water-resource information for the State and the Nation. Each issue of the newsletter will highlight important hydrologic events and significant scientific projects and achievements by CFWSC staff.

« Gages Remain Unfunded

warning iconBudget shortfalls at all levels of government continue to cause reductions in the amount of hydrologic data collected by the USGS. Please visit the USGS Threatened and Endangered Stations website to view a map of all threatened, endangered, or recently discontinued stations. Although historic data for these sites will remain accessible through NWISWeb, no new data will be collected by the USGS. For some sites, data collection has been taken over by other agencies and new data may be available through them.
