China’s Relations with Burma

Priscilla A. Clapp, senior advisor to the U.S. Institute of Peace, testifies before the U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission on China’s Relations with Southeast Asia.

Burma and China are inextricably linked by geography, history, ethnicity, culture, and economy. The original Myanmar tribe came down from Tibet and spawned the kings who united the kingdom of Bama or Myanmar in the 12th century and became the dominant ethnic group of modern Burma, now formally known as Myanmar. The two countries share a land border of more than 1,300 miles, populated largely by tribes living on both sides of the border in Burma’s eastern Shan and Kachin States and in China’s southwestern Yunnan Province.
