Engagement on Retrospective Review of Regulations

The Obama Administration is committed to a regulatory strategy that maintains a balance between protecting the health, welfare, and safety of Americans and promoting economic growth, job creation, competitiveness, and innovation. The Administration’s goal is to maximize the effectiveness and benefit of the rules we complete. Recognizing the need to cut unnecessary red tape – especially for America’s small businesses, with Executive Orders 13563 and 13610 President Obama launched an historic review of existing rules on the books to get rid of those that cost too much or no longer make sense.  This effort is on track to produce completed actions that will nearly $20 billion in regulatory costs in the near term, with more savings to come. These look back steps are not one-time exercises. The Administration is changing the regulatory culture to ensure smart, cost-effective regulations and to eliminate out-of-date and ineffective regulations that needlessly burden American businesses and consumers.

Public input is a principal component of HUD’s retrospective regulatory review efforts. To provide feedback on HUD’s existing rules, the public should email HUD at RegulatoryReview@hud.gov on ways HUD can reduce regulatory burden through:

  • Regulatory modernization, such as a transitioning from paper submissions to electronic submissions;
  • Streamlining and redesigning of existing policies and information collections;
  • Harmonizing and combining similar regulatory requirements between HUD programs and between HUD and other agencies; and
  • Reducing the frequency of reporting while maintaining effective programs.
