Alaska's Amazing Glaciers

Let the Marine Highway take you to incredible glacier viewing not be missed. Visit Gustavus with Glacier Bay National Park, Valdez with access to the Columbia & Worthington Glaciers or Juneau with the Mendenhall Glacier. Many glaciers are accessible by foot, but tour operators also offer experiences for visitors of all interests and abilities. Day Cruises offer an otter's-eye view of glaciers from the sea or get a bird's-eye view on a flightseeing tour. Take a helicopter tour and land on a glacier for a hike or dog-sledding adventure. At AMHS, we feel very connected to our state's glaciers; after all, our vessels all carry the names of glaciers!

New Year, New Ferries

The new Alaska Class Ferries gained names in 2016! Per Alaska law ferries must be named after Alaska glaciers, so AMHS, in cooperation with the DOT&PF Commissioner Luiken and Governor Walker, invited 6th-12th graders to submit an essay supporting a suggested name for each of the new ferries. Thanks to Tanalian School 7th grader Malea Voran of Port Alsworth, the first vessel scheduled for delivery will be named the MV Tazlina. The second winning entry was submitted by Taylor Thompson, an Eagle River High School 10th grader, with the name MV Hubbard. You can find regular updates on our website.
