Motorcycle Safety Program

1. What kind of classes can I take to learn to ride a motorcycle?
   

   The BASIC RIDERS Course (BRC)
   In this course, you'll learn how to operate a motorcycle safely, with emphasis on the special skills and mental attitudes necessary for dealing with traffic. Georgia Motorcycle Safety Program (GMSP) Coaches will start you off with straight-line riding, turning, shifting and stopping. You'll gradually progress to cornering, swerving and emergency braking. In the classroom you'll learn about the different types of motorcycles, their characteristics, and how they operate. The GMSP Coaches, all experienced motorcyclists, will advise you on what to wear for comfort, visibility and protection. You'll find out how alcohol and other drugs affect your ability to ride safely.

2. How much is the BRC?
   

   The cost at a GMSP Training site is $250 ($300 if out of state resident). The fee will vary at GMSP-approved private vendors.

3. Do I need a motorcycle for the BRC?
   

   No, GMSP training sites provide the motorcycle and helmet. GMSP approved private vendors may not supply helmets.

4. What other gear is needed for the BRC?
   

   You will not be permitted to participate in the course unless you wear:

   • A DOT approved helmet, which can be half, ¾, full faced, or modular/flip faced style ( No offensive language or images.). Your coach will have a helmet you can use, if you should need one for the class.
   • Sturdy, over-the-ankle boots (no sneakers)
   • Long pants which cover the entire leg in the seated position
   • Long sleeved shirt or jacket which covers the upper torso and arms
   • Full fingered gloves
   • Eye protection: Face shield, sunglasses, or goggles. Note: Sunglasses and glasses are suitable for the closed range area, not for street use. Your coach will cover this in your class.
   • Bandana (no offensive verbiage or images)
   • We also suggest you bring water, snacks, and sunscreen
5. When can I take the BRC?
   

   Classes are offered year-round, but registration is required. Please visit GMSP Registration for online registration details.

6. Why take the BRC?
   

   A very important segment of the course will show you how to create your own strategy for riding in traffic, and how to deal with critical situations. The course concludes with a knowledge test and an on-cycle skill evaluation. Successful completion of a course earns a graduate a 90-day Driver License Test Waiver from the Georgia Department of Driver Services' motorcycle licensing written test and on-cycle test. It does not waive the vision exam or any fees. It is only valid for 90 days from the day the course ends.

7. I am under 18 years of age; can I still take the BRC?
   

   Students under the age of 18 that successfully complete the Basic Course earn a 90-day Driver License Test Waiver. However, to get their driver license, the student must be at least 17 years of age before the 90-day waiver expires. They must also comply with the requirements of Joshua's Law.

   A parent or legal guardian must accompany any student under the age of 18 to the first class meeting to sign a waiver form. Students under the age of eighteen will not be allowed to attend the course unless a parent or legal guardian is present the first class session (no exceptions)!

8. What kinds of classes are available if I have a motorcycle and want to learn new skills?
   

   The Experienced Course (ERC)
   The Experienced Course is a one-day workshop designed to improve your skills in braking, evasive maneuvers and turning. It provides the experienced motorcyclist with "street strategies" necessary for survival. The customer must provide their own motorcycle and a Department of Transportation (DOT) approved helmet. The cost is $100.00 (Out-of-state fee, $150.00) NO REFUND.

   Advanced Rider Course (ARC)
   This one-day course focuses on the complex skills of self-assessment, personal risk management, and riding strategies. The Course is open to all experienced riders with a current motorcycle driver’s license. The rider will take their motorcycle through advanced riding techniques on the range under the guidance of experienced Georgia Motorcycle Safety Program Coaches. The cost is $100.

9. What classes are available for scooters?
   

   The Basic Riders Course is available for scooters as well.

   • Students use their own scooters. No scooters are provided.
   • Scooter engines must exceed 50cc and be less than 400cc.
   • Students with scooters must show proof that they own the machine and that it is registered(Current Registration) and insured(Current insurance card or policy).
   • Scooters are subject to a safety check and must be street legal.
     The safety check will cover:
     1. Headlight, brake light and turn signals.
     2. Controls for proper function and adjustment. Note:Any adjustments of controls is the responsibility of the vehicle owner. Coaches cannot make adjustments, only recommendations for adjustments.
     3. Obvious leaks of any kind.
     4. Tires for proper trad (2/32 min.) and pressure.
     5. Suspension for proper function.
     6. Vehicle chassis for any functional damage.
     7. Center/side-stand for proper function.
   • If the scooter is going to be ridden to and from class, a Class MP permit is required, (Note: some classes are held after dark and permit holders cannot ride after dark). Students can use a trailer or licensed (M Endorsement) operator to get the scooter to and from the training location.
   • Scooter students must call GMSP at 678-413-8400 after registering and inform staff of their intention to use a scooter (so we can notify your Coach).
