MADIS Research

MADIS supports meteorological research and operational entities by sharing NOAA and non-NOAA observations and observation handling technology with the greater meteorological community. MADIS makes value-added data available with the goal of improving weather forecasting by providing support for data assimilation, numerical weather prediction and other hydrometeorological applications.

MADIS is transitioning to National Weather Service (NWS) operations and will soon consist of two parts: operations and research. The role of MADIS Research is to improve data ingest schemes, integration of additional datasets and providers, quality control and distribution methods employed by MADIS Operations at NWS.

As the transition moves from Initial Operating Capability (IOC) to Final Operating Capability (FOC), additional datasets being added include:

the Citizens Weather Observing Program (CWOP)
CLARUS
National Mesonet
Mobile Platform Environmental Data (MoPED)
Sensing Hazards with Operational Unmanned Technology (SHOUT)
1-minute ASOS/AWOS
Integrated Flood Observing and Warning System (IFLOWS)
Radiometers
Aircraft-based Observations

MADIS Research also performs Tier-III support of the software that performs data ingest, quality control and distribution.
