The purpose of the Resource Management Plan is to determine the management approach for Canyons of the Ancients National Monument (the Monument). The primary responsibility of the plan is to provide protection for the values for which the Monument was created. It provides management objectives, identifies areas where different types of opportunities and experiences are available, and establishes management standards and guidelines for specific program areas. The plan was completed under the authority of the Federal Land Policy and Management Act and is accompanied by an environmental impact statement that complies with National Environmental Policy Act standards. The plan was also completed in compliance with other applicable laws.

BLM has made every effort to assure meaningful public involvement throughout the planning process. Public involvement has been encouraged and accepted throughout the planning process.
