Sensing Water Vapor

This image of the Water Vapor Mass Mixing Ratio at 500 hPa (~5500 m altitude) from the Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS) shows the prominent Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) as a band of higher atmospheric water vapor concentration (blue hues) just north of the equator.

The U.S. Southwest Monsoon

The area of higher water vapor concentration over the southwestern United States corresponds to the Southwest Monsoon, occurring midsummer to early autumn. Arizona and New Mexico can receive half of their annual rainfall during this time. Lightning from monsoon storms can trigger wildfires.

About EOSDIS

The Earth Observing System Data and Information System is a key core capability in NASA’s Earth Science Data Systems Program. It provides end-to-end capabilities for managing NASA’s Earth science data from various sources—satellites, aircraft, field measurements, and various other programs.
