At Gerber Dam (seen here) and other Bureau of Reclamation locations, workers use ropes to access structures, geologic features, or other inaccessible locations . Workers rely on these ropes as the primary means of support, positioning, and safety protection to ascend, descend, and traverse a location while suspended in a specially designed harness. In the past decade, industrial rope access has developed as an established industry, with independent certification and equipment designed specifically for rope-access applications.
In an effort to connect city dwellers to nature, the National Wildlife Refuge System has established urban wildlife refuge partnerships. The partnerships allow the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to work with key community organizations that have been active in wildlife conservation and can help set the stage for expanding the nation’s conservation constituency.
Crab Orchard National Wildlife Refuge, Illinois, offers safe and equitable public use programs and facilities so that visitors have an enjoyable recreational experience and gain an appreciation for fish and wildlife resources, natural and cultural history, outdoor ethics, and environmental awareness.
Mingo National Wildlife Refuge, Missouri, manages more than 12,000 acres of public hunting area. Each year the refuge also hosts Special Managed (Muzzleloader) Deer Hunts on the western side of the refuge. Muzzleloader hunts are offered each year for deer hunters who have been selected through the State of Missouri managed draw system. Hunters may apply for annual muzzleloader hunt by contacting the Missouri Department of Conservation by mid-summer each year. General information is available to the public at http://www.mdc.mo.gov/.

Our work supports Indian self-determination because it helps to ensure that the tribes have a strong voice in shaping the federal policies that directly impact their ability to govern themselves and to provide for the safety, education and economic security of their citizens. We provide services directly, or through contracts, grants or compacts, to 565 federally recognized tribes with a combined service population of approximately 1.9 million American Indians and Alaska Natives.
