Creaturely Love explores some of the ways in which desire makes us both more, and less, human. Focusing on some key figures in modern philosophy, art, and literature – Nietzsche, Salomé, Rilke, Balthus, Musil, Proust – as well as some pre-modern texts and fairytales (Fourier, Fournival, Ovid), this book examines how animals inform and influence the understanding and expression of love between people. From pet names to spirit animals, and allegories to analogies, animals constantly appear in our writings and thoughts about romantic desire.

Creaturely Love argues that animals are not only “good to think with,” as Claude Lévi-Strauss maintained, but also good to love with. Throughout Western history, we seem to need the figure of the animal to express our passions; and yet, ironically, we use these same creatures to disavow our own animal appetites. By following certain charismatic animals, during their passage through the love letters of philosophers, the romances of novelists, the conceits of fables, the epiphanies of poets, the paradoxes of contemporary films, and the digital menageries of the internet, this book demonstrates how essential “the creature” is to our own conception of love, through the ages.

In our appropriation and deployment of the animal in our amorous expression, we are both acknowledging – and disavowing – our own animal aspect. It is this ambivalence which forms the focus of the book, which ultimately argues that what we adore in the beloved is not (only) their humanity, but their creatureliness.

This book offers a set of meditations on the ways in which sound (mainly, but not exclusively, the voice) participates in the production of human, technical, and nonhuman intimacies. As such, it connects various contemporary discussions in sound studies, animal studies, media theory, and ecological thinking: especially those which question the central role of the human.

Sonic Intimacy provides a conceptual framework, and series of case studies, in order to better understand how the voice might be a site of not only creaturely concern and communication (humans, whales, parrots, etc.), but non-subjective expressions of the elements themselves. Who or what can rightly claim to have a voice? Is it a property or capacity that belongs to a subject, even a nonhuman subject? Or might “the voice” be a transductive relationship between the world and listener?

These, and other related questions, are considered alongside four different types of vocal experience: the cybernetic voice, the gendered voice, the creaturely voice, and the ecological voice. In tracking some of the significant ways in which these different voices intersect and interact, this book demonstrates how intimacy is forged through the ear, perhaps even more than through any other sense, mode, or medium.

Moreover, this work seeks to expose the existential stakes nestled in “sonic intimacy,” in which voice is the enabling foundation for an ethics of recognition. Sonic Intimacy ultimately offers a compelling set of reasons and techniques to engage in an enhanced mode of listening, beyond our own kind or species, so that we can attend to the voice of those who are presumed not to possess such a thing in the first place.

It is often argued that contemporary media homogenize our thoughts and actions, without us being fully aware of the restrictions they impose. But what if the problem is not that we are all synchronized to the same motions or moments, but rather dispersed into countless different emotional micro-experiences? When Fatal Strategies was first published in French in 1983, it represented a turning point for Jean Baudrillard: an utterly original, and for many readers, utterly bizarre book that offered a theory as proliferative, ecstatic, and hallucinatory as the postmodern world it endeavored to describe. Arguing against the predetermined outcomes of dialectical thought with his renowned, wry, ambivalent passion, with this volume Jean Baudrillard mounted an attack against the "false problems" posed by Western philosophy. If his Marxist days were firmly behind him, Baudrillard here indicated that metaphysics had also gone the way of sociology and politics: the contemporary world demanded nothing less than Pataphysics, Alfred Jarry's absurdist philosophy that described the laws of the universe supplementary to this one. In effect, with Fatal Strategies, Baudrillard became Baudrillard.
