The Crown Trailer - Claire FoyTen years on from The Queen, which won Helen Mirren the Best Actress award at the Oscars, writer Peter Morgan returns to the subject of Queen Elizabeth II in a completely new format. This time around, Claire Foy stars as Britain’s current monarch in Netflix’s anticipated drama, The Crown.

Along with dropping a terrific first trailer for Baz Luhrmann’s own series, The Get Down, Netflix has also launched the first sizzle for The Crown, giving us an excellent first look at Morgan’s drama. Those lamenting the loss of Downton Abbey may well find comfort in the near arrival of this new series.

The Crown reveals the political rivalries and romance behind Queen Elizabeth II’s reign and the events that shaped the 2nd half of the 20th century.

Foy shares the screen with Matt Smith, John Lithgow, Greg Wise, Vanessa Kirby, Jared Harris, Andy Sanderson, Michael Culkin, Nicholas Rowe, Amir Boutrous, Eileen Atkins, Harriet Walter, Rosalind Knight, Jeremy Northam, and Alex Jennings.

The full list of directors is still to be announced, but we know that Stephen Daldry (Billy Elliot), Julian Jarrold (A Royal Night Out), Philip Martin (Prime Suspect), and Benjamin Caron (Wallander) are among those behind the camera.

Morgan (Frost/Nixon) has penned the entire first season, which runs ten episodes and ten hours in length.

The Crown will premiere in its entirety sometime during this year.
