Advocacy Groups Celebrate Key Wins in National Grid Rate Case

November 4, 2016—Last November, National Grid filed a request with the Massachusetts Department of Public Utilities (DPU) to increase its distribution rates to help cover the costs of net metering for distributed generation (DG) customers. The utility petitioned to increase customer rate charges, including the R-2 low-income rate which would be raised in two phases. Phase I would raise prices, while Phase II would introduce a tiered rate system that would charge between $6 and $20, based on usage.

HHS Releases FY2017 Funds

October 28, 2016—The Office of Community Services (OCS), Division of Energy Assistance (DEA), released approximately $3.09 billion of Federal Fiscal Year (FY) 2017 regular block grant funding to LIHEAP grantees on October 25, 2016. This funding is provided under the Continuing Appropriations Resolution 2017, Public Law 114-223, which the President signed into law on September 29, 2016.

City Solar Credits Equal Savings for Newton Low Income Residents

October 21, 2016—Low-income customers of Eversource in Newton, Massachusetts could see lower bills in the future thanks to the city’s new Community Solar Share Initiative (CoSSi), Mayor Setti Warren recently announced. The project, a part of the city’s broader solar development efforts, involves the installation of a solar paneled carport above the Department of Public Works’ parking lot.

“Bring the Heat” Campaign Contributes Over $60,000 to Atlanta Nonprofits

October 14, 2016—Gas South is donating money raised in its sixth annual “Bring the Heat” campaign to the Salvation Army of Metro Atlanta and the United Way of Greater Atlanta. Gas South donated $50 to the campaign each time the Atlanta Braves’ pitchers struck out a member of the opposing team. In previous years the amount donated was $25 per strikeout. The pitchers struck out 1,277 players this season, bringing the total amount of funds raised to $61,350.

Duke Energy Finalizes Purchase of Piedmont Gas, Low-Income Assistance Promised

October 7, 2016—Duke Energy finalized its planned acquisition of Piedmont Gas this week after announcing its plans to purchase the gas company for $4.9 billion last October. Approval from the North Carolina Utilities Commission was the final step after the Tennessee Regulatory Authority and Piedmont's shareholders had previously voted to support the merger.

Outward Bound Students Help Spread Word About Energy Assistance Programs

September 30, 2016—When it comes to customer outreach, Pasadena Water and Power (PWP) takes a somewhat different approach. Each year, PWP offers positions to students from Outward Bound Adventures (OBA) to perform door-to-door outreach for PWP and SoCal Gas in the Pasadena area. The students, after some training and with the help of an assigned mentor, inform residents about water conservation and energy savings programs that may be available to them and answer any questions those residents may have.

HHS Announces Final Funding Release for FY 2016

September 16, 2016—The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) recently released the final $14.4 million of funding available to LIHEAPs. This final round of funding is available to all LIHEAP grantees with complete plans for federal Fiscal Year 2016. The third release, in addition to the first release of $3.017 billion in October 2015 and $335.5 million on April 1, 2016, brings the total LIHEAP funding to just under $3.37 billion in FFY 2016 for all state, territory, and Native American /tribal organization grantees.

Dominion Virginia Power Continues to Expand EnergyShare

September 9, 2016—One year ago this month, Dominion Virginia Power expanded its EnergyShare program and pledged to invest $57 million between 2015 and 2019 to help fund and expand it. At that time, Dominion stated that its goal was to provide financial assistance to at least 10,000 homes per year, as well as provide weatherization services and outreach to between 2,600 and 5,300 homes per year.
