    America's Oldest Maintained Cemetery

    This cemetery is named for the celebrated militia leader of the Mayflower pilgrims, Myles Standish, who is buried here along with other distinguished people from the Colonial Era, Revolutionar War and the War of 1812.

    While the oldest colonial burial grounds is that of the Spanish conquistadors at St Augustine FL and Pilgrims at Plymouth's Cole, Hill, both have been lost to history. This cemetery located in Duxbury MA is the oldest one still maintaining the original marked gravestones.

    Location: South Duxbury on the corner of Pilgrim By Way and Chestnut Street;

    Myles Standish Monument

    This monument covers a a hermetically sealed chamber made in 1930 to seal the Captain's resting spot. Two previous exhumations of Standish's remains were undertaken in 1889 and 1891. This monument is in the centerpiece of this cemetery. But it is not to be confused with the Tower Monument located nearby on Captain's Hill.
